Why would the Avs give up their best defensive forward and a 1st for a position of strength in defense? We're literally struggling to fit Byram and Timmins into the lineup right now.

Why are the rangers giving up a top 25 nhl prospect and a 2nd for a playoff push when they most likely won’t make the playoffs and even if they do, won’t be serious contenders while they continue to rebuild? They won’t be buyers outside of anyone named PLD or Eichel.

This is more than what Mark stone got and he’s 10xs the player

In a vacuum the value in the Colorado trade is probably not unfair. Replacing Cole with Petry at close to half the caphit is a marvellous swap value-wise, even if it costs a good middle 6 forward and a late 1st.

However, Avs don't have a need for another Dman as they are already 9 deep. Nor do they have an expansion draft protection slot to use on Petry, so he'd effectively be a rental and thus reduce his value. So it's an easy decline.
