If Hyman keeps this play up

Created by: MatthewsFan
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 19, 2021
Published: Jan. 19, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
He could very well command a Tom Wilson(5.1 mil) type contract on the open market. He looked fantastic last night, was absolutely flying, had eight shots, most were jam plays on the PP but still. He has been driving the third line and when he’s up in the top six, he is his usual grinding self. He is such an important piece to this roster. I really hope they can find a number that works for both sides. Losing him would be a big blow IMO.

Kerfoot gets selected by Seattle.
Denis Alexeyev is signed, plays with Korshkov (Lokomotiv), centres his line.

Why does he go from being worth 5mil in the description to 3.85 in the team?

He's definitely a big piece to this team. I have a feeling they'll find a way to keep him but if he demands a larger contract the Leafs will really struggle to bring him back and find a good starting goalie. Maybe they'll hope that Campbell can start but that could be a issue if he struggles. The problem is that the Leafs don't really have any big contracts that they can move for cap space outside of the big 4. I'll be interested to see how Dubas manages.

I think he'll get somewhere in the low $4m range

If he's wanting 5 million he's gone. Without a doubt. If he wants term it will have to be for a low average. That is if he wants to stay in TO. Sure he looked good last night but he also had 8 shots and didn't score, he's a guy who does a lot of good things but doesn't have the skills to deserve such a big contract. Anything more than 3.5 and I am very Leary to sign him.

I've been a Hyman supporter for years, even when the misinformed didn't know why he was playing top line minutes.
Apparently Hyman is quite a wealthy young man, via his businesses and family businesses. $$$$ may not be the issue for him at all next summer. He might take "hometown discount" just because wants to stay in Toronto and the Leafs.

Because the Leafs can’t afford to pay him that. He could get 4.5-5 mil on the open market. I was showing what a AAV could look like if he decides to take a discount to stay with the Leafs. If that’s what he wants to do. All within he’s right to test free agency

Yeah Hyman is a great player to have on the roster, he tries real hard, is a great skater but his lack of top end talent makes him expendable. It'll come down to how bad he wants to stay with the team or if he'd rather make the most money he can on the open market. As much as I like the guy, I'd be real hesitant to give him a 6 year deal no matter the cap hit. If he drops off a cliff in year 3, that contract becomes negative value and you'd be giving up more assets to ever trade it.

Exactly, plus he apparently comes from a wealthy family and has other venues for money so he may not care about getting a huge contract. One can hope.
