Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
COL
  1. Pateryn, Greg
Additional Details:
Cole is definitely better than Pateryn but it’s such a minor trade it really shouldn’t matter. Both shouldn’t play on COL. still, I think sakic could’ve done better there
MIN
  1. Cole, Ian

Don’t know the retention yet.

It depends on what they plan to do with the money that they saved imo

I mean they are retaining according to Michael Russo. Let’s see how much. They may not save much at all

Wait to see the retention before declaring it a L. This is obviously a lot to do with capspace.

I get wanting to move Cole, but I'd've thought they could do better.

I mean you weren't going to get much for cole anyways, i assume this is all about the cap space. I'm glad to see cole gone, someone else can deal with his chips off the glass every play

cap space and room for timmins and Byram on the roster. didn't get the return of full value on Cole but gotta assume getting an everyday rotation spot for their kids is more important

Let’s see the retention. If they end up retaining like a $1 million then it doesn’t make any sense

even if its only a million. Cole could be an everyday player on a handful of teams. On the Avs he was 7th....and probably they wanted him to be 8th bc they want timmins to get more time too

With the amount of injuries Colorado goes through, I think this trade is a mistake. Especially when you take into account how good Cole is defensively and he plays both sides.

i donno, even if we only save a mil that's a mil more to spend on a rental at the deadline, plus cole is a slug out there. Sakic is all about quick transitions and cole is not that. I don't know if Pateryn was playing in minny much but he is about to get burried here. 6th D mins max

I mean it’s basically downgrading a player to give Cole an opportunity elsewhere. Good for Cole and his career, but probably not great for the Avs

if it means the 6th/7th man rotation is Byram Timmins then you live with it bc you have to give them meaningful minutes
If in a month from now Timmins is in the AHL and Byram is back in Juniors then yeah the got hosed

I think its a sign they are ready to trust the kids more

Edit: Also Gilbert cant be over looked, they might believe in him or want to see more of him so let him slide up the depth charts as well.
If its about getting the younger guys more looks great, if its not then this is a lose

Sakic is playing chess while you're thinking checkers. This gives younger guys more playing time and frees up more cap space to improve the bottom 6 if/when needed and the right deal comes along.

Or... you can look at the trade for what it is. A downgrade while shedding a little cap...

If you look strictly at the two players, yeah, it looks that way. But it's not as if the Avs must use Pateryn the same as they would have Cole and they likely won't. Hell, Gilbert is better than this guy. There are lot of moving parts to think about so you have to pull back to look at the bigger picture. This was not a "hockey trade."

Do ya'll realise that Sakic just opened up a huge chunk of deadline capspace?

The saving right now of $1.2m might not seem significant but it will accrue to $6m by the deadline. An extra $1.2m in capspace also provides flexibility with regards to having a 23 man roster whenever needed, rather than always running on bare minimum 20/21 players.

Not a fan, but in Joe we trust. On face value it's a loss for the Avs. All depends on Joe's next move.

Full value on Cole? A lot of us thought it might cost us an asset to move him. In this case we retained and took a similar but cheaper guy back. Moving $4.25m of pure capspace is easier said than done in this league.

There's a chance that Pateryn gets claimed on waivers if he's sent to the taxi squad, in which case Sakic would have cleared $3.45m of capspace by simply retaining $800k. That amount of space is extremely valuable. But even if he doesn't get claimed, his caphit drops to a manageable $1.175m on the taxi squad, which is much more palatable than having Cole on the taxi squad with a caphit of over $3m.
