This is a solid trade IMO.

Minny gets the better player to aid them but COL gets cap
space on a guy who likely is not going to be on their team
next year (hell they could sign him in UFA if need be).

I'm going to assume they'll add a good player at TDL. They may slightly
lose now but they'll win later IMO as I like Pateryn enough
to say its not terrible, for now it looks like a loss
but they're gonna utilize the cap soon. They'll have to be another move
but this is a start for the TDL.

Plus the Avs have Byram and Timmins sitting lol - they're fine imo. And we should all trust Sakic by now.

I hope Sakic uses that extra 1.2M to add someone else cause this is a downgrade

i like Greg Pateryn a lot. But Ian Cole will bring a lot to the Wild locker room. Win-Win imo.

COL has a need at RD compared to a bench player with Cole(cuz the 3 spots on the left are filled) COL wins in that aspect but as MIN gets a better player(not that much but...) they win in that sense...a win win imo...

I think either one would have found themselves sitting on a nightly basis with Byram and Timmins both ready. They save some money and maybe even did Cole a favor. Dude has his name on the Cup and probably prefers to play.

I presume COL needs cap space and wants to play Byram. That's the only justification for this trade; MIN got the better player, far and away.

If this was cole from 2 years ago I would say Colorado won. Now meh they still won as they got space and lets be real Cole looked out of place with that supercore

Also they got cap space, a defensive guy whose cheaper and takes less penalties, and can bring up Byram whenever.

I am voting fair deal since I assume there is some second step in the works Cole was on the way out no secret there but MIN is a division rival I can't assume colorado doing them favors.

It's better for Minnesota value wise, but if we get into details of the trade it's so miniscule difference between the 2 players that I think Colorado sort of wins out in future because they have the extra cap space going into the later stages of the season. I think if we look into it further Colorado are now maximizing space for now, and in the future. Ian Cole is a good defenseman, Greg Pateryn really isn't more than a 7th D. I don't think it really matters to either team this deal. It's so irrelevant to other deals made this isn't like some blockbuster deal, but it is setting up for Colorado to perhaps make one later.

Minnesota wins the trade from a player quality standpoint. That's obviously not why the Avs did this trade, though. They wanted roster space to keep Timmins in the defense after Johnson returns. Pateryn is bound to be waived and taxi-squaded as depth for injuries.

Adding over $1m in cap for a 3rd pair d-man, another LHD to boot. Unless Cole hits waivers tomorrow it's a dumb move my Guerin, who doesn't seem to understand how the salary cap works at all.

The team's problems are at center, not the d-corps.

I am willing to bet COL tried to move him earlier. Because if you are sitting on Byram you're probably thinking, how do I get him on the ice with a log jam.

I'll say it's a fair trade. On a healthy roster Cole is the 6th or 7th defenseman on Colorado depth chart. Pateryn would also be the 6th-7th defenseman but cost less.

Cole is better then Pateryn no doubt but Colorado gain capspace that could be helpful for another trade.

Terrific trade by Colorado and I completely called this trade a while back. Joe Sakic is extremely smart and calculated and opens up more cap space while making room for Bowen Byram and once he makes the lineup full-time they can trade away Greg Pateryn for a draft pick or some loose change. Great move once again Joe and this ALL stems from the Toews trade that he nailed earlier.

Decent trade for both sides. Ian Cole is a slightly better version of Pateryn what gives the Wild more defensive depth (not like they really need it tbh). And the Avs free up some cap space. Seems like a fair deal to me.
