Is PLD a Diva

Created by: MNBassman
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 20, 2021
Published: Jan. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don’t know PLD from a squirrel in my backyard, and I’ve heard reports that him wanting a big market might be over-blown. But...IF he is a diva, I want nothing to do with him...if he is not, this is my all-in offer for him.
For the record, I feel like I’m giving up too much here. What says you?
Trades
CBJ
  1. Beckman, Adam
  2. Bonino, Nick
  3. Dumba, Matt
  4. Khovanov, Alexander
  5. 2021 1st round pick (PIT)
  6. 2022 2nd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Basic breakdown: Dumba/Beckman/Khovanov/1st (lowest of the 2 - both top 5 protected) for PLD, Bonino and the 2nd for Savard.
Columbus’ prospect pool is horrible - maybe they tske this deal and use Bonino as a stopgap C and reload the cupboards with the prospects and picks...

Value wise, in a vacuum, it's too much. But it also doesn't really do a whole lot for Columbus and what they want.

Funny, I've been sitting on an ACGM with a pretty similar trade, but something tells me Minnesota wouldn't be PLD's destination of choice, and that probably wouldn't make it worth it for the Wild to give up what it'd take to get him.

He is so not a diva. When he was in Cape Breton playing for the Screaming Eagles, he had a full two hour practice in the afternoon, he got up early and went to a smaller rink and shot 50 pucks, working on one timers. When the person passing him the pucks had to leave, he stayed by himself and shot fifty more, then went to the gym, then went to a 2 hour practice. This guy wants to win.

This doesn't preclude the idea that he's a diva.

Jetman nails it here: Torts and his abrasive nature are the problem.

I'll give the man credit, he's achieved far more than I ever will, but Tortorella's tough-love approach is ridiculous in this day and age. There's been enough published regarding just baseline decency and positive reinforcement (not even to the levels of snowflake millennials, just like, respect) that would demonstrate John's overall ineffectiveness of connecting to his players.

I hope Jarmo and ownership look at the PLD situation for what it is: the team isn't good enough despite the coach having been able to turn them into something competitive enough to make the playoffs. Ditching the coach, keeping PLD, and bringing in more quality players is the only way the Jackets can hope to be successful during the 2020's. If they trade Dubois, they're probably looking at redoing their rebuild.

I find it hilarious when people call hockey players divas, especially ones at the top level of the game.

I find it hilarious that people think diva means lazy.

he is not. He is so blue collar worker. He wants to be the best and wants to be a good teammate. From PeeWee until a year ago, you never once heard any negative issues with PLD. He simply wants out of Columbus, just like Panarin, Bob, Duchene etc. The GM is a good guy but its the head coach they all want to get away from

Diva's have an inflated ego and an inflated sense of self, they want the spotlight on them, they think they're the best. Working hard and being a diva are not mutually exclusive traits. I'm not saying he's a diva, I don't know him well enough, but just because someone is a diva doesn't mean they're lazy or entitled.

I don't want to split hairs here nor go into a lengthy discourse but all athletes have a little bit of "diva" in them. Your word not mine. When I was a professional athlete, ( only one season) I was very confident, which some people saw as arrogant and cocky. It took me a few years to get humbled again to "rejoin" the rest of society. I have helped several players in this area in my consulting work. With all of this said, I do not believe PLD is a distraction to any team. You can go back to PeeWee and this is the first year his name is popping up like this, just like others that wanted to leave.

It's a lot but we need a player like him. I'd do it, not sure if Columbus does though. Still think it would come down to Boldy or Rossi going the other way

I think it's a fair trade, but I wouldn't do it. Also, I think TanSor is right that we wouldn't get out of this without including Boldy/Rossi. The reason I wouldn't do it is I think that our next window opens about 2 years away when Boldy/Rossi get here and not right now. In which case that first round pick becomes even more important right now.

I'd be more interested in trading Dumba for a C2 and prospects (similar to the Zucker approach) because every trade for a C1 includes too many of our prospects. Let's build through these next couple of years of draft picks and target 2022 as our season.
