I've always been a fan of him, Could even play him with Fowler and try a Hutton-Manson 3rd pair to give us 3 good stable pairs

Probably would be for the Ducks more than anyone else, but still doesn't seem like it would be super rewarding. I know very little about Honka, but if Dallas is waiving him now, after signing him back and probably hoping that he'd be a piece that fit into their future plans, not sure how much hope there is left that he pans out

The whole covid situation in Dallas makes me think no one will claim him. I think at the very least he's worth a claim, worst case he doesnt work out getting a free shot at a former 1st round pick is almost always worth it imo, he could solidify our bottom pair

Just took a look at Honka's pages on Evolving Hockey - there might be a little more than I thought. Hard to say obviously, just looking at the numbers, but he was strong defensively all three seasons he played in the NHL, with some offensive upside. Could be the system, particularly in 18-19 when his numbers were most impressive and Dallas started establishing their reputation as a good defensive team, but yeah, there could definitely be a solid bottom pairing defenseman here.

As someone who has watched Honka since he was drafted, he's a solid bottom-4 RD. The only reason he fell out of favor in Dallas, was because of the stupid decisions to bring in guys like Methot, Polak, and Sekera to play ahead of him. The Stars coaching staff never really gave him a legitimate chance to prove that he had staying power in the lineup. In the few games he played, Honka was solid. May not have showed up on the scoresheet, but he played very well for Dallas. If they actually give him a shot back in 2018, Honka is likely on the Stars 2nd pair right now.

Every team should be interested in picking up Honka off of waivers. He can slot into an NHL lineup immediately, and provides solid defensive depth to the right side of a blue line.

I can’t see him getting past us in the waiver order tbh, Manson is looking like he’s gonna miss some time so Honka can plug in for the time being

Appreciate the analysis! Yeah, I hope someone picks him up and gives him a shot. Hawks would honestly be another team that I think that could really use him, but they're so stubborn in their plans for the future that I doubt the FO gives him any consideration.

But then what do you do with him once Manson is back? And what about Guhle? That's minor league players are for.

I understand this is moot considering Honka cleared (and can we put him coming to us to bed forever now?) but this sort of thing always pops up. "So and so is hurt, let's claim X). These guys don't stay hurt. I've always hated the notion of panic-claiming a player because of injury. We have plenty of bottom-pairing guys, any waiver-worth d-man isn't going to replace what Manson brings nor is any better than what we already have. Also, we're out of contracts. We literally can't claim anybody. If we want to bring someone in, it'll have to be via trade.
