Bonino would be a great for the Avs if we sell IMO. Probably will cost like a 3rd, maybe a 2nd if there's other teams interested

3rd isn't enough and the Avs don't have a 2nd. It's not a good fit in that regard.

Id gladly give a 2nd + sweetener for him with retention but the Avs dont have a 2nd until 2023. Instead they could offer guys like Jost, Bowers, etc and possibly picks as well

There are other teams that are capable of paying the cost. It looks like Colorado will be out of luck on Bonino. The Wild have no interest in adding to obtain Jost or Bowers.

I agree hes worth a 2nd, but just because the Avs dont have one for the next 2 years doesnt mean the price automatically jumps up to a 1st. The value of a 2nd could be made up of a prospect or young player and possibly sweeteners on top of that

What about Sampo Ranta? He is tearing it up this year for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and would be interested in a trade around Bonino and Ranta.

I wonder if Guerin will be wary about facing Colorado in round 1 of the playoffs, and thus avoids trading Bonino to Colorado.

I suggested Ranta + 4th for Bonino (no retention) in another thread. Bump the 4th up to a 3rd with 50% retained.

Indeed. There are many ways to find value that matches a 2nd rounder that don't involve a 1st.

Twins just got 2nd round pick & nick Bonino for Luke kunin. Yeah, kunin could get a 1st. Twins aren't trading him for less

No from wild who already have too many wingers. If wild are out of it , will only Bonino be available but not for winger prospect either Ranta doesn't touch wild top 15 prospect even.

Btw, the value of 50% retained on that contract at the deadline in real cash is $451k. Seems reasonable to bump a pick up from 4th to 3rd, or just add another mid/late round pick.

You mean when you were proposing mid round picks for him and the Wild gave up a conditional 7th so they could flip him at the deadline for more?

It's completely dependent on what Guerin is looking for. It's possible if he likes those players, but it's more likely he'd rather just pick his own player in the draft. Since Guerin isn't here and I am, I don't see why we would have any interest in any of them. With the 2nd, there's a higher chance you can actually get a player better than Bonino is.

Sure, but as stated above, it depends on how Guerin feels about those players. How many of them would you take over a 2nd round pick right now?

Kunin got Bonino + an early 2nd and also moved up from pick 101 to pick 70. The total package for Kunin was worth a 1st, but Bonino alone wont return that

Sure, but as stated above, it depends on how Guerin feels about those players. How many of them would you take over a 2nd round pick right now?


The benefit of receiving young players/prospects instead of picks is that you've had the opportunity to see them in their D+1 or D+2 or later years, thus reducing the risk of the asset/player/pick busting. Guerin will likely also want for the rebuild to be quick, and waiting 3-4 years to see if a prospect turns out might not be as appealing as getting an NHL ready prospect who can jump into the lineup to replace Bonino.
