I say, it's fair....except for McDavid having double the cap hit. Probably is made up for though because of how much better Draisaitl is than Rantenan.

The Oilers would need to take on a bad contract to make it work.

Draisitl career ppg 1.0 Rantanen .9ppg exactly how much better is he? The EDM trio’s cap hit is $11M more than the COL, you’re not saying Draisitl is $11M more valuable than Rantanen because that is preposterous.

Colorado wouldn't even consider this.

Cap hits aside, McDavid and Draisatil don't know how to play defence. MacKinnon and Rantanen do. Don't be fooled by all the pure offence of McDavid and Draisatil. MacKinnon and Rantanen are more complete players and will win before McDavid and Draisatil do, unless they learn to play defence fast.

Check your math and come back, but He's probably worth the difference without the goalies added

Both teams would decline anyway though I suspect Edmonton would decline less swiftly than Colorado.

Colorado adds for sure. McDavid and Draisaitl are both elite center in their own right, MacKinnon is nearly as good offensively but Rantanen is a complimentary player and has way less value than any of the other skaters here. And that's without even considering how many years these players are under contract for: McDavid (6), Draisaitl (5) vs Rantanen (5) and MacKinnon (3). In this scenario Colorado is getting the best players AND getting them for longer term.

(Neither goalie moves the dial much for me. Similar age, similar contracts, similar performance last year.)

Edmonton declines more swiftly IMO. McDavid and Draisaitl push their own lines, Rantanen cannot because he's a complimentary player like Nugent-Hopkins. In the past 3 seasons at 5v5:

Rantanen with MacKinnon: 3.36 GF/60 - 2.54 GA/60 = +0.82 G/60 (56.90 GF%)
Rantanen w/o MacKinnon: 1.47 GF/60 - 1.47 GA/60 = even (50.00 GF%)

Draisaitl proved last year that he could drive his own line and actually led the league in scoring in the 2nd half after being moved off McDavid's line. That 1-2 punch is far more valuable than MacKinnon and a sidekick who doesn't have much value without him.

McDavid being under team control for 6 years + Draisaitl for 5 vs just 3 for MacKinnon is a huge deal too.

The tougue-in-cheek tagging of me in this might be worth a warning one day wink

Honestly, it's the language you present the argument in. This is more approachable. I think there might be value in doing a deep-dive comparison between both men's stats to flush out why Rantanen is more RNH than Draisaitl. GF/60 is telling, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.

It wasn't tongue-in-cheek, it was a serious question. I don't want to be accused of trolling a guy most people think is a superstar just because the stats I trust show him differently. Thanks.

Yeah my bad on math but the difference in the trios is $6.62M. And the differences in the duos is $5M. NFW is Draisitl worth $5M more. My math was bad your take is worse.

My take is this, MacKinnon has 3 years left, both Draisaitl and McDavid 6, and Rantenan 5. So the difference for your last 3 years will be the same or MacKinnon gets payed 12 and McDavid Draisaitl is worth less and way more valuable. So 5m for 3 years and then you have to get MacKinnon to resign and he has to resign for 11 or something for it to be less than the other 2 pairing. I'd say it's close, I'd keep MacKinnon if I'm colorado but it's my personal preference

I get that preference. For me it’s about MacKinnon, and his drive and performance particularly in the playoffs, AND the $5M in cap space

Oh, I mean if rn you said I'll give u McDavid or MacKinnon I'll take Mack...but if it's Draisaitl or Rantenan I'd take Draisaitl. I'd also definitely take Grubaur over Koskinan
