That's probably what it'd take to take Kopitar out of LA, and he could be the missing piece to bring Colorado to a Stanley Cup. It remains a huge risk though, considering is age and Newhook's potential.

Don’t think it’s worth it for COL. They can get a more viable 3rd line center through Jenner, Bonnio, etc. Kopitar is definitely not a 3C

I think it's best to put kopitar out to pasture and keep the assets on this one

It sounds a bit absurd, but it's sneaky smart. If there's a way to get it done with close to 50% retention and not involving Byram or Girard then it's something Sakic should consider. That C depth would be by far the best in the league.

The only issue would be in 2 years when Kadri becomes an UFA, then you have 36 year old Kopitar as 2C and hope that he is still playing well. It's a move that could cut the cup window short, but it could also be what puts the team over the top in a big way.

Agreed, but I was referring to the trade itself. Kopitar is not the right fit for them currently.

No way Colorado does that, they send away their best foward prospect two 1st and large pieces of their depth for an overrated old man

Kopitar's great but he's also old and regressing. I think that's too much for Colorado to give up when he doesn't fit a glaring need.

I think you know Kopitar wouldn't be the 3C. He would definitely be a great pickup for COL, and it's all about the cup, so all the assets are expendable if it gets COL the cup, or cups. LA would seriously consider this, except for that retention. It's four seasons of retention, $20MM in cap space held back for a player long gone, and can never be traded away, it's just there. In three seasons, there's a few big raises that will probably need to be given. I'm thinking the extra assets are for the retained money, and it's definitely tempting.

COL is smiling if this happens. LA is happy, but with a more serious face, while they figure out their cap in 3 seasons. BTW, anyone who says the cap will be higher in three seasons, so will the raises. I'm shaking my head thinking about the best group of prospects, actually getting better.

That amount of retention makes this a non-starter for LA, period. I'd counteroffer other things if that retention wasn't on the table, but the point is moot with it there.

Also, you're showing your bias if you think Kopitar slots under Nazem Kadri, regardless of age.

Anyone who thinks Kopitar is overrated in any way hasn't seen Kopitar play.

Putting Kopitar at 3C wasn't necessarily to say that he's worse than Kadri. It's simply about the line combinations.

Notice that Nichuskin is on the 2nd line instead of Saad. That's because Nichuskin-Kadri-Burakovsky is a line that has worked really well for us, so it makes sense to keep that together.

For all intents and purposes though Kadri's line could the the "3rd" line on paper. The 2nd and 3rd lines are pretty interchangeable, what matters more is matchups.

I've watched him play every single game of his career, about half the time in person. Have you ever watched him play?
