So when you said "When's the last star to be traded? Post Salary cap era? Is there even one?" what you really meant is when is the last time that a 23-year-old Auston Matthews was traded on a Thursday on mid January during a covid pandemic? You are right. That exact scenario has never happened.

Haha good one. No. Taylor Hall was not even a point per game player when he was traded and he never cracked 30 goals once prior to being traded. That is not even remotely close to what Matthews is. And Karlsson was a pending UFA on his way out anyways so instead of losing him Ottawa got a return for him (which was the right and smart thing to do), unlike the islanders who lost JT for nothing for example.

So Karlsson, totally different stage in his career, and Hall not even half as good of player as Matthews. So no, I'm not being too specific, those are two sh*t comparables, and there aren't any comparables because it doesn't ever happen.

If Karlsson had 5 years left on his deal at the time of trade then it would be comparable. Even if he had at least 2 years, but he was about to walk anyways.

How could that be comparable? Matthews has less than 4 years left. There is no way one could possibly compare trading one player with 5 years left to a player with less than 4 years left. Especially when one of them had won 2 Norris trophies, finished in the top-9 in Hart voting 4 times and had carried his team to the conference finals a year before.

Toronto fans turned Kessel into a "coach killer" now they'll try run the same story line with Matthews? God that's annoying.

Agreed. As much as fans are always involved, I think the media really pushes soft minded individuals into the line of thinking that goes into running a guy like Kessel out of town. An excellent example of it is Brian Burke $hitting on Nylander. Like, f*ck..."Sure he had 3 points, but he was invisible for the rest of the game!".

As a Caps fan, obviously I'd like to believe that Matthews is only trying to start something up in response to Ovechkin, Kuzentsov, Orlov, and Samsonov being suspended.

As a realist, I'd say Florida is playing above expectations, early this year, and a has an equivalent center they need to either extend or trade. Cue flame war, but Barkov's defense and Matthews' goal scoring put each at a really high level. Finding a way to balance the cap makes it tricky.

The Wild are also having a great start and could offer a couple of top-four defensemen and some futures for a 1C.

We'll give you 55000 cookies for matthews

I thought the new CBA limited the amount of cookies you could give for a player to 50000.

Good lord you are missing the point. I AM SAYING THE KARLSSON TRADE IS NOT COMPARABLE. And giving an example that would make it more comparable. good god. 5 years 4 years close enough. It's not like comparing it to one year like done before. WAKE UP

Pre-Salary cap. 30 years ago. When's the last star to be traded? Post Salary cap era? Is there even one?

Just saying... if the best player in NHL history gets traded, anyone can

Last night, he sort of called Keefe out during the media press

He did no such thing, wasn’t feeling good today, Keefe gave him the day off.

For anyone who is wondering

Looks less like an injury, and more of an issue between player and coach. They would have mentioned whether he looked uncomfortable on the ice or something that made the situation look injury based

Sick...

No he meant when was the last young franchise player traded. The answer is once. And it was a horrible trade.

Ufa rentals are not even close.

Fair enough. And Barkov put up a 92 point season on a really weak team. But it's his defense that really stands out. You put him with Marner, he's a 100 point guy with a +50.

I don’t think he meant rented out. I mean you can’t just assume everyone is dumb and has never seen rental trades.

How many stars are traded as rentals? Almost no one. Stars rarely get traded, but when they do it generally has little to do with the number of years until they are UFA. Half of Leafs' fans would not be surprised at all if McDavid or Eichel were traded in the next year and a half. Matthews is similarly playing on a consistently underperforming team, but with a much shorter contract, and is the only one of the three who is overpaid for what he delivers.

Mcdavid is not going to get traded anytime soon. If he does it will be the year before he's UFA because Oilers wouldn't want to lose him for nothing. Have to assume the same for Eichel. You're scrambling to try make yourself sound like you're making sense. But you're not. There's no precedent for these kinds of trades post salary cap era.
