Going forward without Armia and my thoughts so far

Created by: SevenLeg
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 22, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
-This edition of the team is looking fire so far. I'd even say it's better than it has ever been in the last 10 years.

- Gallagher and Drouin are not the go-to guys anymore, and it suits them much better. Each of our three lines can carry the offense depending on the games.

-Kotkaniemi, in the last two games, 75CF%, 79% xGF%, 69.75% Faceoffs, 1G 2 A.

-Joel Armia finally got going, and he was finally the Armia that we expected him to be, but injuries & dirty plays are part of the game.

-Frolik can be a great complementary player on that line and he's the one that suits Kotkaniemi and Toffoli best, and the latter can play in his natural position. On the other hand, we now have the opportunity to see what Corey Perry can do in a limited role.

-Tyler Toffoli, well, had a surprising stint lately but a welcome one. 5g, 1a in the last two games.

-Jake Allen is looking to be the best starter since Jaroslav Halak, which is not that hard considering his predecessors but it is something that we crucially needed.

-Jake Evans is looking like a solid 4C for the future, and is already killing penalty and we know what this means with Claude Julien.

I think we have our best team in a long time, we have 2 capable goalies, incredible forward depth and our lines are clicking, good defensive depth and chemistry, a good PP and a decent PK but it can score
we just need to take less penalties but i'd say we are a top 2 team in the North

Habs better hope Gallagher is a "go to guy" with his 6.5m X 6 years starting at age 29 extension in place. Drouin well ride out his contract. Certainly it looks good for the Habs as their young forwards seem to doing well.

Chris Kreider, Anders Lee and James van Riemsdyk all have similar contracts/role and were never expected to carry their respective offense, despite being solid contributors.

You're certainly right on the comparables. Just wondering if it's the right thing to do in a flat cap league and where RFAs on the their year four contracts seem to be making almost UFA money.
Interesting cap situation for the Habs next year with the Petry and Gallagher extensions in place, and if. Allen remains a Hab. 7.4m in cap can be cleared with Armia and Tatar gone as UFAs but then LW and RW positions have to be filled, and KK gets a nice raise and Denault (or his equivalent) to be signed, plus a few more RFA get raises.

It requires a bit of cap work, but it's certainly doable even if we extend Tatar & Danault. In those posts, I've worked with Edmundson going to Seattle but it also works if they opt for Chiarot. It works even better if one of the two main UFAs leaves

There are so many teams that hope their "Edmundsons'" are claimed by Seattle. Yea, I lotta work to be done by so many teams. I kinda think the NHL and NHLPA messed up the cap. Sure favours players that had long term deals in place before Covid and flat cap. The NHL had announced that the expected cap for 20/21 was expected to be about 86m Now its 81.5 for 20/21 and 21/22

Teams like guys like Edmundson. If Bergevin felt the need to acquire his UFA rights, it's because he knew that there would be a bidding war for him in free agency. Let's hope that Ron Francis is one of those GMs or that he thinks he can flip him.
