Can Torts make Laine the power forward he should have been from the start

Created by: justaBoss
Team: 2020-21 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 23, 2021

Description
Laine has all of the 3 S-ses that a power forward needs - shot, size and strength.

Now it's only about making it manifest. Under a coach like Tortorella it should be possible.

Here's the new lines I think they'll be rolling with

Definitely leave a noticeable gap and center for CBJ, but personally I’m rooting for Laine to bounce back and flourish under Tortz’s system

Laine doesn't fit Torts defensive system. The only way I see it works is if he just lets Laine run wild and only deploy him in offensive situations. He is essentially their only dependable goal scorer, it doesn't make sense to limit his goal scoring

Laine already became that under Maurice this past season. Imo you guys are getting the best player and Roslovic too.

Very possible. CBJ could very well be banking on getting more bang for their buck with a move like this. They were forced to move Dubois posthaste.

Technically that applies to everyone from business point of view.

Not the point of this post though.

This is 100000% true IMO. If laine wanted out of Winnipeg because of the way Maurice handled him. I’m sure it’ll be an issue in CBJ. I wish laine all the best and want Tortz to make laine like trotz did to Ovi.

What are you talking about??? Laine is a guaranteed 30 goals at least. Since coming into the league only 6 players have more goals. In the the one game he has played this season he has 2 goals and an assist.

Well, i thought my point would be obvious, i guess it wasn’t.

The jackets likely intend to gauge laine’s attitude and coachability, but this is torts team. I would be shocked if this plan wasn’t hatched with the concept of flipping laine very soon. My guess is it’s the off season.

Same guy who went lax on Panarin after he provided the necessary results.

Why shouldn't that apply to Laine as well.

Habs fans thought the same for years with Pacioretty.

If he's not a power forward -- he's not.

Also, it's pretty clear he's a sniper, there's no two way about it

He's a natural sniper due to his shot, but I do see the potential in him to become a power forward. He showed that in his last game in WPG, scoring a Gordie Howe hat trick and all that jazz.

He has the assets. Now under the new coaching staff I want to see them getting the ducks in a row.

When a legit argument can be made that laine is the best winger in the league, come talk to me.

Lol, cmon man. No matter what they’re thinking, they have to say that. If they believe it, they have to say it. If they intend to trade him tomorrow, they have to say it. If they intend on deporting him, they have to say that.

I also believe it’s true. They’ll give it a shot, see how it works. The player likely won’t do a hard 180 and they’ll move on.

He is becoming an all around player but season before last he was a defensive liability. He has made getting better defensively a priority and his defensive game has improved but it still needs some work.

It'll be interesting to see what Laine can do in CBJ. First time his career he's actually the best forward of his team. And he's only 22.

I don't think him becoming as good as Panarin was in CBJ is totally impossible.

I'd agree the size is there to impose itself. And I'm interested to see how this Torts experiment will play out. But Laine's strength is his touch of death -- his ability to lose himself to some open space -- he has to be used in a way where he should be constantly looking for shots.

I think it might come down to how we're thinking about power forwards and that style of play. It's a dying breed of players, especially skilled power forwards. Today, I would count Rantanen and maybe Tkachuk? as current examples. Less skilled but clear power forwards would be Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson. The guys in recent years that embodied that and I usually think of are Rick Nash, Jerome Iginla, and Peter Forsberg as the founding father to all power forwards.

I'm just sayin' Laine is a sniper to the bone. Doesn't mean he can't impose himself physically. I would say look at Ovi as the example to follow for Laine.

Yes and he really can't make him any better. Like I said above Laine has already committed to improving defensively and what's left comes from experience.
