Thoughts on this trade

Created by: redwingsfan04
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 23, 2021
Published: Jan. 23, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I really like this trade for both teams for several reasons

Detroit:
-Adds an extra draft pick
-By taking back Chiasson, they can make this trade work for both sides without retaining any salary on Nemeth. This allows us to retain on our other rentals to increase their value and make trades work with other cap tight teams
-Detroit could potentially flip Chiasson for another draft pick

Edmonton:
-Nemeth adds defensive stability to a team that is really struggling defensively
Trades
DET
  1. Chiasson, Alex
  2. 2022 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Chiasson sent to Detroit to match salary. This trade would be assuming that Chiasson isn't playing a significant role in Edmonton.
EDM
  1. Nemeth, Patrik
Additional Details:
Nemeth isn't anything special but he's a solid and dependable defenseman. He's likely best suited for a second or third pair role, however, he's been playing top pair minutes since his arrival in Detroit and hasn't looked out of place. If Edmonton is still in playoff contention and wants to add defense at a reasonable cost, Nemeth would be a good option.

Not bad tbh, I'm just not sure how quarantine would affect the will of the GMs to make that trade.

The purpose of the trade is getting a draft pick, not acquiring Chiasson. The reason why I think acquiring Chiasson makes sense is so Detroit doesn't need to retain on Nemeth.

Nemeth pretty much fills a role on the top pairing line for us right now, So why would we deal him for a guy we're going to healthy scratch a lot?

I wonder if trades between Canadian and American teams start to happen a couple weeks before the TDL so the players get a longer chance to make an impact with their new team

A 3rd sounds like a bit much for Nemeth, especially when he can’t play for 2 weeks.

Because he's a rental and we could get a draft pick back for him? Chiasson isn't a major part of the trade, I just added him so we wouldn't have to retain on Nemeth and we could retain salary on some of our other guys

Okay so you're basically trading Nemth for a pick that's next year not this year? If we deal Nemeth it's for this years pick not next year. Yzerman only cares about this years draft not next years draft.

Edmonton's 3rd for this year belongs to Calgary and we already have their 2nd for this year.

So do you want Edmonton's 1st round pick or 4th round pick? They don't have a 2nd or 3rd this year and IMO a 2022 3rd is still better than a 2021 4th.

I might be a bit biased but Nemeth has been a really solid defenseman for us. Maybe the trade could happen a couple weeks before the TDL so quarantine isn't as much of an issue

I made with the assumption that he’s leaving. If Nemeth was willing to resign in Detroit I’d rather do that. We don’t really have any top 4 LHD so trading him would leave a big hole.

McIlrath played 16 games last season it just shows how bad last season was.

Even Cody Goloubef got in the lineup a couple times. I think the worse part is how many players we had that did nothing the entire year that were regulars for us. Nielsen, Daley, Erne, Ehn, Perlini, Biega, and Abdelkader combined for 35 points and all played over 40 games last season (except for Perlini who played 39).

San Jose would be a good place for Nemeth at the deadline. We dependable defense on the backend. Bobby Ryan would also be of interest for SJ

a third is useless; a capable, dependable partner for Hronek is good and useful.
