Value wise, I agree with you as Laine is clearly the more valuable player. However, needs wise I think Jets did well on this trade.

I'd much rather a quality for quality trade like this than the quality for quantity trades we normally see.

The retention is irrelevant because the team is not accruing cap space this season due to being LTIR. This just leaves the Jets with the identical amount of cap space they had before the trade

Wouldn't not retaining allow them some cap space to possibly use at the TDL?

Yes but we have 4M to spare so that translates to about a 7M move(s) come TDL
