Danault - Offseason

Created by: GMs
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2021
Published: Jan. 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Everything you need to know with Phillip Danault

Marc Bergevin offered a 5X5 to Danault ( 5 years 5M AAV )
Marc Bergevin compared Danault to J-G Pageau, who signed a 6X5 with the NYI

Phillip Danault and is agent wants 5 years 5.7M OR 6 years 5.5M
Danault clan compared Danault to Brock Nelson, who signed a 6X6

A couple of NHL teams ( we dont know which one ) are ready to pay Danault 6M AAV if he hits the free agency. Danault want to stay in Montreal tho

IMO, the lowest AAV would be better for MTL, with Suzuki and Romanov contract coming soon

6 years 5.25M AAV

We can't afford Tatar AND Danault
We need to sign Suzuki and Romanov

Expansion draft protection list :

Forwards (7) : Drouin Anderson Toffoli Kotkaniemi Gallagher Danault Lehkonen

Defenseman : Petry Weber Fleury

Goalie : Price

Exposed : Byron Evans Chiarot Edmundson Kulak Mete Allen

    Mete will get a raise
For Sutter and Chiasson, sure 750K
    Not a big deal

My guess : Edmundson is getting drafted by Seattle, Byron is getting traded, Tatar and Danault both sign here (Danault 5x5,25m and Tatar 1x6m (short term so he still have value when his contract ends and get the chance to stay in MTL one more year before Suzuki and Romy sign their deals)), Fleury will have the 3RHD spot (hes great, he deserves to be on this team next year imo) and a rookie on defense will make the team (Harris, Norlinder (can play NHL even tho hes signed in SHL) or Guhle).

    Drouin-Suzuki-Anderson
    Toffoli-KK-Caufield
    Tatar-Danault-Gallagher
    Lehkonen-Evans-Armia

    Chiarot-Weber
    Romanov-Petry

Over the weekend, the Habs "leaked" that Danault turned down $5M for 6 years with trade protections. That only happens when the team is done negotiating, especially Bergevin. It's possible he'd go an extra $250k/year to get it done, but it's more likely that he's either dealt or, because of the covid protocols, that Danault finishes the season and walks away as a UFA. If Danault really wants to stay in Montreal, he should take Bergevin's offer. We all remember "if you want loyalty, buy a dog". Bergevin learned a few lessons that summer and I doubt he will let the Danault situation past the April trade deadline.

Bergy will never sign Chiasson, he never won the cup.

I thought about signing Tatar to a 1 deal year, but I can’t see Tatar taking it. It will be is last contract, so I think he’ll try to get the more he can. But not impossible. Fleury isn’t great, his positioning and first pass aren’t great. He wasn’t ready and got rushed a little bit. If he’s waiver exempt, send him back in Laval with Brook. I think Norlinder stay another year in Sweden and Guhle plays in Laval. Harris could be the 7th dman tho.

I think it's more of a role thing than money. KK and Suzuki will eventually push him to 3c. He knows he can easily be a 2c or better on another team for the rest of his career. My prediction is he's going to Minnesota as they would love to have him and he can play a greater role as the they really don't got a true 1C

I think honestly it's best to let him go as this team will need money for Suzuki, Romanov, Primeau, and other key guys
