Description

Purely a question of taste. Slavin is, to me anyway, a D you can build around as a cornerstone and a natural future D corps leader to replace EJ. Very much flies under the radar and I like the idea of him being a Colorado kid. Girard is more of a complementary piece, and with Byram looking like he's going to be decent in the transition and Toews able to play the point on the PP, Sammy, whilst not exactly surplus to requirements can be used to bolster the D a little further. Girard is younger, signed longer and for a little less, and a great little puck moving D but Slavin is the better all round D, hence the additional picks and prospect in the trade. No change as far as the expansion draft goes as Slavin would just be protected instead of Girard. Whether the value is there or not is another question? Avs fans will probably hate it as Girard is much loved, be interesting to see 'Canes fans opinions.

Your opening sentences is why the Canes are not trading him. Certainly would cost more than that if they decided to.

Fair point. The 'Canes obviously see him as I do if that's the case. What would you consider his likely value if he would cost more?

LMAO, we have Byram, Makar, Toews & Girard......but yeah it is kinda greedy!

26 legit 2 way 1st pair d man signed for 5 years to less than what he’s worth and no need or desire to move him. Very few trades involving him make them more competitive now when it’s completed. So think untouchables...plus. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Was expecting to see Pesce like all the rest of the Canes defense deals tend to be.

Slavin is a no-go...you’re not going to find a deal both sides would do. Think the other comments tell you why.

Sorry, but that's plain silly. I get Slavin is high value but to suggest he's going to fetch any of those and then some.....seriously? Rantanen they wouldn't have cap space for. MacKinnon's value is waaaay higher. Makar is the only one that you might say would be reasonable to include in trade talks when talking value and his ceiling is higher so none of those would even be in contention.

You probably couldn't hand-pick a better D to partner Makar than Slavin. One of the few Girard trades on here that has actually made me think about it.

Remember a few days ago when I said I'd trade Girard and you replied with 'What?' and I replied 'I didn't say who for though'. This was my thinking lol. I agree that it would take an overpay (though not MacK, Makar, Rants as above) but certainly would probably have to entertain one of Bowers/Kaut/Newhook (and maybe even a pick or lower prospect) with Girard to get it done I think. I was being a little cheap with this offer though I don't think it would be as much on top of Girard as most seem to.

Definitely agree he and Makar would be dynamite.

Yep, that was my exact thinking as well. I'd pull the trigger on that.

There are very few ways I'd move Sammy though I'll agree there too.

Avs would have to trade a core piece of your team in order to get a core piece of the Canes team. That’s why I’ve said there isn’t a deal here. It’s not a ‘value’ based decision...it’s a team construction thing.

As mentioned, Avs wouldn’t trade McKinnon Miko or Makar for Slavin, and Canes wouldn’t trade Slavin for anything less. The rest is just playing GM on NHL21 adding picks and lesser assets to trick the computer. Not real life.
