I think Avs might bite. If not I don`t think it would take much more. I think they make this deal and then use cap space and maybe even the 2nd to get a veteran guy for their cup run.

The Coyle trade is tricky because I don`t know if he waives NTC. But he is a good player. I think both teams would improve from this deal.

the Coyle trade isn't about Coyle being a "bad player" it's about him not being a player worth his contract. He's not worth 5.4 mil per for 6 seasons. He's just not. The productivity simply isn't there. It was a bad contract when it was signed and remains a bad contract. You pay a guy 5.4 million and you better put some damn points on the board.

As for COL, two things. A. teams looking for playoff runs don't want to move defense as that's usually the depth they are looking for. B. if they did move him, depending how injuries effect a short season aka less toll on teams, there could be a much larger market for him. It depends who gets in the playoffs and who doesn't. A guy like Savard will probably turn a 1st if CBJ isn't in. A guy like Graves isn't far behind that. Depends what the demand is. Him not being a rental increases value for a team looking for defense.

Yeah I was wondering about that. Coyle said he is excited to be there long term but MAYBEEE he bites at chance to play with Pens?

Kase doesn`t fill as much of a need. Ideally Pens would add a skilled, right handed center.

The Bruins biggest need long term is younger centers. This trade just doesnt’ really make a bit of sense from Boston’s perspective.

Trade the 2nd for Getzlaf at 3C and then trade for a veteran D if you want injury insurance. Graves won`t be happy sitting in press box waiting for injuries. Bednar said he hasn`t played well either.

I think they take advantage of Pens need and use the assets/cap space to improve their team for a cup run elsewhere.

There is no guarantee they will be able to make that trade though. The only way they do move Graves IMHO is in a direct move for a #3C so therefore Pens are not a logical trading partner. As for Graves being happy, he'll be happy to be on a contender and take his shot when it comes, which it surely will. Either that or he gets moved as per my argument in a direct #3C trade.

Yeah Coyle has been a good fit but you don`t think they would want to improve their D?

Make this deal and move Smith or Studnicka to 3C?

What about Krejci? Would need to retain $$$ though.

Coyle not moving anywhere. He's part of the solution, not part of the problem. Petterson? You are kidding right. Not an upgrade AND he's overpaid. You're stuck with him.

Graves has been a healthy scratch. No room for him there. Avs can take the cap space and try to add a goalie or forward.

Bos trade only happens if we get Graves. I would say 3C is bigger need for us than LD

This team is much better from these moves IMO. The team now fits and they have their roles clearly defined. The Pens as they currently stand without these moves have all that pieces (many of which are hurt) but they don`t fit together. It is awkward. They need to tweak it and trades are hard to make right now.

Bos needs LD. They can have Craig Smith play 3C for them. Maybe Studnicka.
Colorado would make this deal. I don`t know if they would want something else or would get a better offer though.

Colorado has almost 2.5 million in deadline cap space. As a team that is a contender for a cup, I’m sure they understand that injuries and covid will happen and would much rather graves to enter into the lineup as opposed to Riikola. Even if they wanted to make a deadline splash, they could just use Graves in that deal. But realistically, I’d rather keep graves and just use picks to make a deadline splash deal if I’m the AVS

COL declines.
BOS can keep that awful Coyle contract. He is not worth 5 mil per for 6 seasons at 28. He's not even a 40 point player or a 20 goal scorer. He's way over paid.

Boston will keep Coyle and that contract. Disagree with your opinion but respect the fact that you might know about bad contracts. Malkin falling off a cliff at 9.5M for 2 years, Zucker at 5.5M for 3 years and the gold standard, Matheson 6 years at 4.875M. That's the cost of being good and trying to stay relevant as long as possible.

Why? Hate to break it you you but Pittsburgh is not a huge draw for players. There are 8-10 teams that are draws. Historic, bright lights big city/market, weather, tax havens. Etc. There are 8-10 teams nobody really wants to go to. The rest are in the middle. Pens are middle. High middle but middle. Leaving the team he grew up dreamed about playing for for anyone else is a downgrade.

Facts right here. The only players that would bite to play for the pens only bite if they know they are playing on the same line as Crosby or Malkin right now. Maybe a few years ago the “chance to play for the pens” mattered when they were winning cups, but they look like a fringe playoff team now.

I wouldn’t go that far. MP is on solid contract and isn’t overpaid. Probably slightly underpaid. He is a legit top 4 D. As for an upgrade on Boston, I’m not as familiar with their D situation but considering they didn’t re-up chara says they are probably good on D

Absolutely. I’m not trying to be a dick. It’s just reality. Fans will always care more about and think more highly of their team than players do. It’s a hard pill to swallow.

Guys that grew up cheering for the Pens or Crosby, playing for the Pens is a big deal. Everyone else....they are just another team.

He sat one game, after playing atrociously. COL needs defensive depth with the compacted season, and young guys playing. The value of the trade is in the ball park but if COL were to make a move to improve another area why not just use Graves with that team directly?

Fair enough. Like Grzelcyk for Boston I see Petterson as a 5-6 D on a team who is a serious contender for the Cup. That does not make them top 4 d men in reality even though they may be there on the depth chart. My point is paying 4M for a 5-6 d is overpayment even though they are respectable players.

Because teams dont want multi-year contracts for TDL rentals. They want picks and prospects.

MP would immediately step in as the #1 LD on Boston. McAvoy is obviously better.

Don't think so. Just because he has more experience doesn't mean he's #1 LD. They are playing young guys for a reason. If they do trade for a #1LD it will be for a better player than Petterson.

Agree to disagree there. MP is a second pair on most teams. 1st pair on a terrible team. MP is only a 3rd pair on a team with a deep defensive core.

When you think Malkin who was well over a PPG player last year is a "bad contract" and "fell off" Hell in 55 games last year he had 50 points in even strength alone. How does an almost point per game even strength player become a bad contract????????
Zucker as well had 12 points in 15 games for the penguins last year. Not exactly looking like a "bad contract"

Now that Matheson contract is no doubt a bad contract currently. No one is going to argue that. But at least I'm honest about it.
You are paying Coyle 5.4 million and he can't grab up more than 30 some points and even hit 20 goals.
Be honest about your bad contracts, you'll sound like you actually know something about hockey. No player making 5.4 per pulling those kind of numbers is earning his weight.
And yes, it would be just another bad contract on the penguins who have had to deal with their share of them lately. But at least I can be honest about which ones aren't working out.
As for this year, it's way to early to go off on what ones are good or bad etc... these guys didn't have real camps, no exhibition no nothing. Don't expect too much from anyone at this point. There are a lot of players still trying to get up to speed.

For Marcass Petterson tho? Oh I forgot you added Colton sceviour, one of the greatest forwards ever. No way in hell Boston does this.
