Tierney

Created by: TJTwolf
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 25, 2021
Published: Jan. 25, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Probably not enough to get it done. Pateryn is a throw in to make up cap parity. Originally thought of this before he was waived. Ottawa seem a little light on RHD so he'd be there for depth. Bellemare is a cheap replacement who can play C and with his salary plus Pateryn's it's roughly level. Both are UFA at the end of the season so the third is really what OTT are getting plus cover for this season (and the opportunity to re-sign either of course).

Lol, that's pretty bad for Ottawa. Two borderline NHLers and a 3rd for Tierney... and keep in mind that Pateryn got waived today so he has very little value.

Or maybe I'm wrong. Whatcha say @csick, you want some Bellemare and Pateryn? lol

Yeah I did say in the description about the waiver, and probably not enough. Not sure I'd call Bellemare borderline though. Third/Fourth line yes, but not borderline. Was struggling to find the right value for Tierney for days. Hard one to work out. Certainly willing to consider adding prospects into the trade. Pateryn and Bellemare were more balancing cap.

Yeah..... but not enough is one thing.....

That offer is a non-starter. I would be bold enough to suggest Dorion would want to at Timmins as the principle return.

Tierney isn’t a long term solution in Ottawa, but he’s just 26 and plays an important role, and it’s unlikely they trade him for a couple of older players that aren’t even better than he is. So no, Ottawa doesn’t trade a younger better player for two older worse players, even if you include a late 3rd.

Tierney is a 26 y/o who's good for for 40-45 points while playing 3C (or 2C when needed) and lead the league in shorthanded goals last year. Acquiring him would start with a 2nd round pick and a prospect. Not a 35 y/o pivot who's depth (4th line at best) and a 30 y/o D man who'd be lucky to see the taxi squad.
Switch the 3rd rounder to a 5th rounder and add Justin Barron to that trade - then we'll happily take Pateryn and Bellemare off your cap - but make no mistake, we don't want them.

Whole point was to get the ball rolling as I was struggling to work out any kind of value. smile

Interesting idea though it would be too rich for my blood. Which prospect if we can drop it to a third (Avs have a dearth of seconds)?

Tierney aught to be available, but there's no chance Ottawa touches this. Sens Don't need more 30+ year olds who will play at the fringes of the lineup. They already have too many of those guys as is.

Also from a value perspective, it's not close. Tierney is an above average 3C who can be a stopgap 2C, and is on a solid contract with term. Pateryn and Bellemare would not be valuable pieces for Ottawa, and a 3rd doesn't get your foot in the door in contract negotiations.

I'd be looking for something in the ballpark of a 2nd and a 3rd.

Honestly, Ottawa has no need for another B prospect with a low ceiling; they have plenty of those and more coming with four 2nd round picks in the next two years.
Tierney's under contract next season too so there's no pressure to move him for us. If we get a late first or a 2nd+ for him, maybe, but for less... I don't see it.

Yep. Idea was spitballing to get the ball rolling, as I had no idea how to value Tierney, was just drawing blanks. Sometimes lowballing is a good way to start the conversation.

All fair points hence I re-did my offer in another post. Having done a little more digging I realised just how seriously I'd lowballed the starting point. Looking forward to seeing how he plays tonight to see if the eye test matches the stats (and yes I realise 1 game is no great sample, I'll try to watch more during the season) if I can stay awake for it.

I should expand on my comment, Justin Barron is the right prospect to offer for Tierney, in this situation. In 2012 redrafts, Tierney goes in the same pick range as Barron, and there’s no wondering what his impact in the NHL will be. This is a safe bet, and the age difference is the payment for getting the player you want.
