Probably pretty close to the lay of the land bar any major moves I'd say. Maybe some line/pairings differences, and a smidge here and there on the money but close enough.

I’d rather see Newhook on the wing in the 2nd line to start out, but that’s me being picky.

I wouldn't be surprised if Timmins is traded for an upgrade on Compher or Donskoi.

With Byram/Toews/Makar/Girard/Johnson as the top 5D we could probably get away with a cheap Jan Rutta type PKer on the 3rd pair, thus making Timmins expendable to grab a top 6 forward.

In the NCAA Newhook started on the wing and was a bit meh, but then when they moved him back to C he absolutely took off.

That said, NHL is a different beast so perhaps you're right.

Adding a versatile guy like Jenner who can play C and LW would be the perfect way to ease Newhook into playing C in the NHL I think.

What do you think about maybe using Gilbert in that role, though he'd be on his off side, or seeing if Burroughs could step up to it as he's a RHD? Just thoughts. I wouldn't ideally want to trade Timmins as I think he's going to be ideal for that spot but I wouldn't be totally opposed IF he fetched us the right guy in return.

Ideally Gilbert would be 7th D at best.

Buroughs is 25 and has never played an NHL game so that doesn't seem like the answer either.

If we can get a top 6 forward with a low caphit for Timmins I'm sure it's something Sakic would consider. Something's going to have to give at RHD at some point anyways with Helleson and Barron in the pipeline.

Ideally the give would be Johnson though eventually with Girard, Byram, Toews, Gilbert on the left and Makar, Timmins, Barron, Helleson on the right.......ok I'm being greedy again, I'll stop now! tears of joy

Seriously though I agree if it gets us the right guy.

If we trade Timmins and Seattle don't take Graves our top 6 D would be completely intact next season:

    Toews --- Makar
    Byram --- Girard
    Graves --- Johnson

In fact, we could probably roll with that D until 2023, at which point Toews will likely get traded for cap reasons, as he'll be a pending UFA and we'll have to pay Byram. It'll be too much to have 3 LHD's earning $4m, $5m, plus whatever Byram will make, not to mention Makar's caphit. Toews should fetch us a decent haul to set us up nicely in that 2023 retool.

I would assume that Johnson will see out his contract with the Avs, and then possibly sign a cheap deal to stick around in a depth role, assuming that he can still play at a reasonably high level at 35.

Have to say almost every which way we should be spoilt for a while. Yeah, I could see EJ doing that as well myself. Guess it all will depend on what opportunities to make moves come up for Mr Sakic.

It's a pretty big assumption that Johnson's play will hold up for the next 3 years, so nothing is certain. With Helleson and Barron joining in the next 1-2 years it's going to be awfully temting to fire Johnson out of a cannon and replace him with a younger and cheaper guy on that 3rd pairing.
