Pateryn is a RHD and Dermott Lehtonen Sandin are all better than him

I know, but I see claiming Pateryn off of waivers as a trade chip for future trades. The Leafs want to upgrade their forward depth, but they have limited NHL quality pieces to make a fair and equivalent trade in value, which is why claiming Pateryn off of waivers slightly makes sense. You are not going to get a top 6 forward with a package consisting of Engvall as the "big" piece going the other way, however, if you package Engvall, Pateryn, and a high end pick (depending on who the player you are attempting to go after), then there could be a possibility.

You can't trade a waiver claim without offering him up to all the teams again. They have 0 value.

Does a player have to go through waiver claims before trading them?

The Avs would be happy for you to take him I'm sure. Pretty sure he has to go through waivers again though before you could trade him this season. After that I think (though I may be wrong), for example at the end of the season, that you're fine.

Unless bogosian is leaving no. Pateryn is 3 x the price of dermott and is a much worse defenseman, and the top 4 is set. So a pateryn-bogo pairing would be nightmareish

Doesn't work like that, you aren't getting someone good thinking Engvall and Pateryn have value. Maybe Engvall is worth a late pick, but Pateryn have close to negative value

Not necessarily, but if a team wasn't willing to take the player for free from waivers, why would a team pay anything for the asset?

Pateryn isn't an upgrade over Dermott. Unless Leafs are planning on trading Dermott for forward depth, I don't think claiming Pateryn makes sense. Unless they want someone who can fill in on the right side during injuries, but Lilly is capable of that IMO.

I heard the plan for Dermott was trade for picks or other assets but as of now probs not happening. With the way Bogo has been playing along with Brodie and Holl don't see the need for Pateryn. He really isn't an upgrade over any of em and the cap hit sucks.

Pateryn would have 0 trade value, BUT they could pick him up and use Dermott as a chip

if a team is looking for defense, TOR is the last team they are looking at to make a trade.

More RHD fascination. Pateryn isn't better than any of the Leafs starting six and not better than then next three either. He's not worth bumping any one on the taxi squad.

take him please, he was only traded for cap relief as Cole/Pateryn are the 8th guy on the depth chart, maybe even 9th in Pateryn case.
Avs would gladly take additional cap space
