Cap space doesn’t put pucks in nets. Players do. Leafs do not need cap space.

Yep, that trade would save the Leafs lots of cap. But really for a trade like this to have a any meaning, show the Arizona side of the trade and their cap problems taking so much cap in one player,.

Arizona can hardly pay the players they have, they can't afford Matthews and he wants to win not fade off into obscurity in the desert

Congratulations. You've just traded a goal scoring franchise centre in his early 20's for cap space, and proceeded to do absolutely nothing with it.

I suppose you could hope to maybe draft a franchise centre with the first pick that you've acquired who may be ready in four or five years when the team's window has closed completely.

Dumb! 100% dumb!

Arizona ownership can't afford Matthews contract.

Sure they can,. They are close to the cap now. A teams expenditures are about 140m with lots of fixed costs, so whether they spend 80m on salaries or 75m, doesn't really matter
