Anyone else worried

Description
Because I’m very worried. We would have lost every game so far if not for Varlamov, our offense is dead in the water and our defense looks REALLY bad. If you ask me, we should have never moved Toews, but it’s too late to change that.

And what terrifies me more is Trotz doesn’t seem perturbed by the lack of offense. So we’re not seeing Wahlstrom or Bellows getting extended looks this year. A game here and there, but not enough to acclimate them to the NHL.

Even all this I could live with if the philosophy was “our team’s in a rough spot cap space wise and we know full well we don’t have the talent to actually compete, let’s let the kids play and develop and whatever happens happens postseason-wise. But that’s clearly not the philosophy here, veterans or sandpaper forwards are getting priority and that priority is entirely undeserved in light of how they play. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if Johnston or Komarov replace Beau while he’s injured.

So if I showed below what I expect the lineup to be. But if I were Lou at this point, I’d be skating the prospects every night until I figure out whether they belong or not. We have a ton of bad contracts to let expire and we need a better prospect system than what we have anyways. Whatever happens with the postseason or lack thereof happens though.

yes im concerned that Trotz is so stubborn that he'd rather lose with "his guys" then give the kids a shot. This is why I wouldn't mind if he was fired (not happening)

it's interesting that Ross Johnston took 2 offensive zone penalties and has been awful defensively, yet bellows is the one who gets scratched despite drawing two penalties and making solid plays in the defensive zone with limited ice time.

Toews has looked fantastic for Colorado, I'm not surprised at all that you're missing him.

He's played 25+ mins multiple times, mainly partnered with Makar. He's also looked great on PP2 with Girard, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist, along with being a mainstay on the PK.

2 2nd's for him was a steal, as is his 4x4.1 contract.

Looking at that lineup there aren't many pieces that would be realistically available or attractive in a trade. But what would NYI want for Cizikas? WIth Pageau at 3C you could probably afford to lose Cizikas if it allowed you to upgrade elsewhere in the forward group I'm guessing.

Cizikas for Compher+ perhaps? Or Jost+?

I actually wouldn't say up to this point that the isles have missed him overall. Dobson has done well replacing him, but the isles would have a top 5 D core with toews , dobson, pulock, and pelech.

cizikas is pretty much untouchable. He's too important to this team and hes an excellent play driver.

I'd love to have a matchup line of Nichuskin - Cizikas - Jost and utterly suffocate top lines. But yeah Cizikas is one of the last players NYI should trade, assuming that they aren't out of it at the deadline.

yeah that line would probably be the best defensive line in the league. The isles don't need to trade cizikas to add a goal scoring forward, they can solve their problems internally (bellows+wahlstrom), but Trotz hates young players so who knows if that will happen.

I think it'll take a larger sample size of not-so-good play for Trotz to ever be convinced to change the lineup.

remember when Lou was given the executive of the year award, for a team that he had nothing to do with and over achieved?

but hey Matt Martin resigned!

I know it’s random but it really bugs me to see Pelech only being 78 ovr in NHL 21, he be 83 or 84 ovr at least. Pelech is so underated in the real NHL too!

if your car only has 3 wheels, no doors, and a trunk latch that doesn't close is it the drivers fault?

Mitch korn deserves most of the credit - Barry Trotz holds this team back by playing useless grinders over young talent.

thats kinda my point, when management invests in martin/Leo/clutterbuck/Johnston/Ladd (all on multi-year +$1m deals); thats 3-5 nightly forward spots clogged up and not allowing Wahlstrom/Bellows/dare i say Ho-Sang/etc. to play and develop

Lou didn’t sign ladd+clutterbuck. Ladd is in the minors. Komarov is on the taxi squad. Bellows was in the lineup and was one of their better players in his 7 minutes of ice time. Did Lou force trotz to only give bellows 7 minutes of ice time and then scratch him for no reason?

I don’t think bellows or whalstrom would change the trajectory of this offense at all. What they need is a top tier sniper but they don’t have the cap space or the assets to get that right now. They play a style that doesn’t allow for many shots on both sides and if they didn’t play that style they’d wind up like the 2018 team under Doug weight. The grinders are important since they eat up minutes and wear the other teams top guys down.

they actually would. Part of modern defense requires the ability to keep opponents honest with some offensive threat/possession. Guys like ross, Kuhnackl and komarov get caved in the defensive zone and guess what, they aren't actually good at preventing quality chances against, which is the main goal. Playing a million 4th line grinders like trotz does is reckless and makes the future for this team look extremely bleak because its holds back the prospects from developing.

The main problem with the islanders is lack of shooting talent. Bellows and wahlstrom have as good of a shot as some of the elite snipers in the NHL. Will wahlstrom and bellows be elite overall? probably not. I project bellows as a 2nd liner and wahlstrom as an average 1st line forward. The isles can literally run a powerplay through either one of them. What exactly do you think a guy like Hoffman does on the PP? He stays in one spot and waits for someone to set him up.

Bellows is getting a chance and I’m sure we will see wahlstrom at some point. The difference with these bottom six guys is that we know what we are getting from them. When you put a young prospect in the line up there’s a risk due to uncertainty. This isn’t a rebuilding team this is a team so you can’t afford to take risks. Now that doesn’t mean you don’t play them. Trotz is easing Bellows into it I’m sure his minutes will increase as the season goes on. You have to let him get acclimated to the league before you give him a bigger role. You can’t run a power play through guys that aren’t acclimated to the pace of an nhl game you have to ease them into it. Be patient we played 5 games I’m sure we will see more of them as the season goes on
