Georgiev for Graves

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 27, 2021
Published: Jan. 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
COL
  1. Georgiev, Alexandar
Additional Details:
Coach Bednar said in today's pre-game interview that Francouz was not expected back in the near future, and right now Avs have an AHL backup as their NHL backup, which isn't good enough.

Adding Georgiev would give the team a reliable backup, and guard against injury to Grubauer. Georgiev has a low enough caphit at $2.425m that Colorado could manage carrying 3 goalies.

Timmins has looked decent in his games this season and could step up to fill the role vacated by Graves. Though perhaps a further depth move would be necessary in separate trade as well.
NYR
  1. Graves, Ryan
Additional Details:
NYR need a two-way top 4 LHD, and already know Graves well. Value and cap wise it's a reasonably balanced trade that gets each team something they need.

NYR have Shesterkin as the clear No.1, and would promote Kinkaid to the backup role.

Are you saying that because you prefer NYR not to have Graves for those 8 games against your team? grin

Oh wow,

8 starts, 6 wins, 2 losses, 13 GA, .941 sv%, 1.80 GAA, and 2 shutouts. Impressive.

If Georgiev only played the Isles and Leafs, he’d be a perennial Vezina winner

This is a very legit trade that I love. However, would Graves play like he has in Colorado, or be the fringe NHLer in NY again? The other thing for me is that the Rangers would have to find a backup goalie. I don’t see Kinkaid being the backup this year. Maybe make a waiver claim like Anton Forsberg or Eric Comrie? But other than these concerns this trade is a phenomenal concept.

I like the idea but I think the only way a Rangers trade for LHD at this point is if they are giving up one of their prospects because Lindgren continues to look good and Miller has looked amazing. So this trade would only create more problems for the Rangers next season when they have more prospects looking for playing time.

Rangers then have the Avs issue: an AHLer as backup.

The issue is going to be that having as much D depth as possible going into the playoffs as possible will be important. "The near future" could mean a week or two but it could also mean a month. I think they can ride that out with Gru playing the bulk and Miska only play the second game of back-to-backs. And no, goalies don't get injured from "overuse." If that were true, we'd expect to see guys like Hellebuyck and Vasilevskiy injured more purely by dint of them playing a lot of games.

I never really expected Georgiev to be a future asset. And while this trade would mean Keith Kinkaid has to play in the NHL for 2021-22, I expect Tyler Wall to be ready after that.

In my opinion our only A-grade defensive prospects are Nils Lundkvist and Braden Schneider, both of which are right defence. While Zac Jones and Matthew Robertson are good prospects I think they’re B-grade tier. We could potentially use those two in a trade for a 2C maybe?

I like it, but have to admit it's slightly discouraging to re-acquire Graves during a lackluster season by his standards.

It’s still better than anything Johnson and Smith give us lol. Plus I think he’s playing at his floor right now, only direction he’ll go is up.

My biggest concern about acquiring Graves is if he’d feel hesitant to join us again considering we never gave him NHL time but that might just be my anxiety talking

I disagree. He might have peaked. Never know. I love Graves. Just Georgiev is absolutely not a player we can be freely dangling right now.

Graves got traded at a time when Rangers had Alain Vigneault as coach who preferred his smaller PMD's over bigger more classical NHL Dmen.

Obviously things have changed and Graves has shown that he can skate well enough to play a modern game despite his size. I mean, he literally played 1st pairing minutes on the best skating team in the league last season so he must be doing something right.

The only thing I could see as a hindrance is GM Gorton not wanting egg on his face by re-acquiring the same player he traded away 3 years ago for peanuts.

I definitely agree about that Georgiev take but I don’t see a role for him in New York once his bridge deal ends. However, I believe at the earliest he gets moved over the offseason as opposed to the trade deadline. We’ll see what happens with Graves the rest of the season but it’s way too early to even consider that conclusion, let alone jump to it.
