Deadline - PIT goes all in

Created by: Random2152
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 29, 2021
Published: Jan. 29, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If I were PIT I would completely mortgage the future to keep going for a cup now. This trade would do that. Almost no chance this happens or that a trade looks like this but hey it is for fun.
The scenario is that BUF is clearly out and Eichel demands the trade now rather than the off season.
PIT gives up their 3 best prospects
PIT gives up all of their picks this year
PIT gives up two 1sts
PIT gives up a 2nd
PIT gives up a (in others opinion) top 4 Dman signed to term, Kapanen (who has more value than this site likes to admit), McCann, and a cap dump of Matheson retained.
PIT gives up pick swaps in the two years after they give up their 1sts (yes this is allowed, it just doesn't happen often - See the 2002 draft)
Trades
PIT
BUF
  1. Blomqvist, Joel [Reserve List]
  2. Kapanen, Kasperi
  3. Légaré, Nathan
  4. Matheson, Michael ($875,000 retained)
  5. McCann, Jared
  6. Pettersson, Marcus
  7. Poulin, Samuel
  8. 2021 2nd round pick (PIT)
  9. 2021 5th round pick (PIT)
  10. 2021 7th round pick (PIT)
  11. 2021 7th round pick (WSH)
  12. 2021 7th round pick (ANA)
  13. 2022 1st round pick (PIT)
  14. 2022 2nd round pick (PIT)
  15. 2023 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
BUF has the right to swap 1st round picks in 2024 and 2025 so long as PITs 1st is not top 3 (yes this is allowed and has happened before - See Rick Nash).

Conditions on the picks:
2022 1st is top 3 protected and Pit has the option to move it to 2023 unprotected. The 2023 pick and all conditions would move to 2024. The pick swaps would also move 1 year.

2023 1st is top 3 protected and PIT has the option to move it to 2024 unprotected. The pick swaps would also move 1 year.

Wait. You think the Sabres are going to make it? Man I wouldn't bet on that (although from a management perspective I can understand if you're close since you need to convince Jack to stay).

Also, 4 1st round picks, 3 good young players, a high end A prospect, a high end - high upside almost A prospect (calling him a B is wrong) and a well regarded goalie is enough lol.

Those 3 prospects aren’t that great. Buffalo will most likely still be in the playoff race come the TDL.

You massively underrate Poulin. And Legere is no joke either. I don't know what to make of goalies so I defer to experts and they say he is good so.

Pittsburgh says no. Pettersson>McCabe; McCann+1rst> 1 year of 1/2 Hall and Kapanen+Poulin+Légaré+Blomqvist+Matheson 17.95% retention+2nd+2nd>Eichel, let alone the 5th, 3 7ths and other 1rst.

Holy toxic comment. This trade is just overall bad for the sabres. There's a thing called quality over quantity and this is a great example of the opposite. Sabres decline.

I agree. If they’re forced to trade eichal they’ll get a blue chip piece in return and pens aren’t offering that in this trade.

You're accusing me of being toxic after this thread? That's ****ing rich bud.

Show me the validation to cf saying that you can sign a player right after buying them out with multiple years left on the contract.

That's just a lot of stuff for what is BY FAR the best two players in the trade.

And I have to agree that just because they're three of Pittsburgs BEST prospects doesn't mean that they are some of the BEST. Trading those picks and young guys only will bankrupt Pittsburg in about 3-4 yrs time, because their system will be so empty.

Take out Hall and about half of those PITTS players and think about Crosby at Eichel's age and think what was he worth to you at that age, and I think you'll find you're deal especially for McCabe and Hall as well is really bad.

The Sabres are currently .500 without their top line producing 5v5. So either they start producing and the Sabres improve because of it, making them a playoff team, or they dont and Eichel has no one to blame but himself

He has 9 points but isn’t playing that great yet. Him and Hall haven’t really meshed well.

Most of his points are on the PP, and assists. Thats also my point, they need to figure something out, and if they do theyll be dangerous and if they dont its Eichels fault. I saw Hall out with Staal last night too, was kinda interesting

The reason I am okay doing this is because the PIT rebuild is going to be long and ugly anyway. Keeping these guys doesn't change that. They are in a position where they need to just send it and hope for the best. There is no future beyond Crosby, getting Eichel creates a future beyond Malkin tho, extending the window.

In terms of that, maybe it is just who I read but they seem to be very high on Poulin in particular. I know that Legere is not a blue chipper even though he has some nice upside and goalies are weird.

In terms of the trade itself, its damn near the most PIT could offer, which is where this comes from. Value wise McCabe and Hall have very little. People scoff thanks to name value but rentals are cheap. Most of this is for Eichel. It is a Quantity over Quality trade for sure but the overall is there I think

McCabe is a really good defenseman. I would think Taylor Hall a former MVP has some value around the league.. Pittsburgh definitely doesn’t have enough to make a realistic offer for Eichel.

Ya sure, keep telling yourself that, go look at what Hall got as a rental last year. 3 good prospects conditional 1st and 3rd.

In terms of the rental value, just look at what guys went for (including Hall) recently. One of the 1sts, Legere and the 2021 2nd would more than cover Hall's value, rental Dmen with little history of being good don't cost much, say the 2022 2nd (I included him because I think he is actually undervalued) which means the rest is for Eichel.

For the PIT thing, I actually kind of agree. This is pretty much the max they could offer. The market for this will be interesting but If I am the GM of PIT I am willing to absolutely mortgage the future as this could extend the window. I would be desperately trying to get Eichel.

I stand by that none of those prospects were good. They got a late 1st, a late 3rd and 3 B prospects. Very little value. Rentals are cheap

Well you’d be wrong. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Schnarr is equal to Legare. Merkley to Poulin. Then there was Bahl. And the 1st was not late it was mid, 18th which they used on Dawson Mercer.

Poulin, Legare, 1st for Hall

2nd/5th for McCabe

Rest does not get you Eichel.
