Ottawa Senators

Created by: sensibleguy
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 29, 2021
Published: Jan. 29, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a continuation of recent discussions concerning some sort of a Tierney for Graves deal. I’ve substituted Stepan for Tierney, who with the retained money, lowered the cap hit coming back to Colorado, and I’ve lowered it a bit more by swapping Bellemare for Reilly.

Stepan with 50% retained. Stepan can play up and down the lineup, but should be the 3C or 4C in Colorado, and is a definite upgrade on the aging Bellemare.

Reilly is a different type of defender than Graves. Reilly is a modern day, highly mobile defender, with good puck moving qualities versus Graves shutdown qualities.

The cap hit difference favours Colorado by approximately $216K
$4.966MM out
$4.750MM in

Both Stepan and Reilly are on expiring contracts, which will not affect the Colorado cap next season, unless Sakic decides to resign one or both, to deals that he deems adequate.

This benefits Colorado because it improves their bottom6 while making their defence more mobile.

This benefits Ottawa because they are in need of a left shot defender that can PK and skate more than 12 minutes a game.

Avs decline

They could move graves but Stepan even as a rental isn’t worth giving up graves for. Stepan just isn’t very good anymore and would be a bad for. Cheaper pick ups would be available that would have his similar impacts

Trying to trade Reilly before people realize he's really bad, eh?

I think this trade heavily favors the senators. The redundancy of Graves in the Avs lineup thanks to D. Toews makes him a cap casualty but at the same time, they'd be selling at a loss if they made this move. Stepan is nowhere near as an effective bottom line forward as PEB and Reilly alone has negative value. I'd think they'd want Wolanin over Reilly in a counter offer.

I don’t expect the trade to happen realistically. I believe Graves will be gone in the expansion draft. Sakic will find a way to save Toews, but he can’t save Toews and Graves.

Yeah graves will be gone and that’s ok, like you said can’t save everyone.

But just Stepan doesn’t have that sort of return in a trade, especially the avs who really value analytic assessments, so far this season Stepan has been a pretty much a drag on the teams production when he is on the ice. Unless he elevates his game, he’s actively the teams shot differentials anytime he is on the ice, not a good sign

I didn’t include Wolanin because he’s currently injured, but his lower cap hit would definitely benefit Colorado. It wouldn’t bother me to swap Reilly for Wolanin. Ottawa could actually use Reilly more for his PP, which he’d never see in Colorado.

Edit: I think I worded that backwards, lol.

That sounds like whenever Reilly steps on the ice for us as well... frown

Stepan hasn’t been good because Ottawa hasn’t been good, and they’re leaning on him too much. If Smith quits his power trip and plays White up in the lineup, Stepan can play the same role he would in Colorado, and be more successful. Time will tell.

Reilly’s not bad, he just doesn’t belong on the 2nd pair, or the PK, and that’s where they’re playing him.

Our depth chart is all out of whack if he's on our second pair. It also doesn't help when we have a monster in Chabot hogging 30 minutes of ice-time.

I’m just waiting for the ridiculous offers for Chabot to show up on this site, lol.

he wasn't good in Arizona last year either, hes just been declining rapidly. Probably this is more of what he will be now going forward

In this trade scenario Reilly is just a 8th dman in case of injuries, but its not an encouraging sign if he has those type of impacts as dman playing regular shifts

I’m not sure they would part with Holl for Chabot, but I was thinking more about Byron or Mete, lol

Stepan just isn't what the Avs would be looking for. I'd still say a Graves for Tierney trade straight up is more likely (maybe there's picks/prospects going each way to balance things if the GMs considered it a touch off one way or the other), but with the scare with Toews last night it just shows how valuable that D depth might be as well.
