No way in hell is Makar getting 8x 12M with covid-salarycap.
Try 3x 7M or 5x8,5M max

I highly doubt $12 mil. On a long term deal he might be max 8 years and $76 mil or $9.5 mil a year. Any more seems a bit much. This is taking into consideration the Ekblad and Chabot contracts (Ekblad- $7.5 mil x 8 years and Chabot $8 mil x 8 years).

Woah....
That is a lot for Makar. And when has a Calder winner got of their rookie contract and got 12 mil lol.
Makar will take a bridge deal most likely.

Covid is irrelevant to his contract. He isn't worth 12M. 8x8M is the max he gets which is still unbelievably good for a D man. OTT was stupid for ever giving EK his contract but no one wants to play there so money talks

Makar's out producing Rantanen as a defenceman and Rantanen got 9.25Mx6.

On bridge deal he gets 8-9Mx3. 10M for a 5 year deal.

Those numbers are just wishful thinking. Why on Earth would he take that little unless he was trying to do the team a favour. If that's all the Avs offer him he's leaving for an offer sheet.

If this is based on Erik Karlsson, he’d have to win 2 Norris trophies first. Also salary cap would have to go up

Makar is better than Ekblad and Chabot. Ekblad was coming off a 36 point season and Chabot was coming off a 55 point season. Makar is scoring at over a ppg right now. Colorado would probably to match anything if he decides to take an offersheet.

I'd rather Makar than Karlsson.

No one is offersheeting him $12 mil. That’s completely unreasonable. No chance Sakic gives him $12 mil. Stop being delusional.

Walk him straight to free agency? He might do 8.75Mx4, but then the cap will be going up and he'll get 14-15M on his next contact.

He's a top 5 D man in the league plus he's young and still improving. That's a completely reasonable contract.

That's like saying nobody would have offer sheeted McDavid. You have to pay for top tier talent.

Actually im pretty sure since he burnt his 1st year after a college season he only has 2 accrued seasons so he can be an RFA for 4 more years after his ELC, Miles Wood did that too

Actually Chabors 8x 8M is somewhat comparable.
And before you eat me alive, consider this:
Makar is faster vs Chabot is more physical
Makar has better points production vs Chabot defends better
Makar gets his points behind NHLs best offense (one of the best powerplays) vs Chabot plays is freaking Ottawa.

Am not seeing any defender getting those Karlsson numbers anytime soon. If he wants/gets them -> Avs are up **** creek as soon as mackinnons deal runs out.
Perhaps if he takes 8 years it could be upto 8.5-9.5M

You dont give a young player what the top defence in the league got in free agency. He’s an RFA who’s ineligible for arbitration he’s going to get 7x7 or 7x3. All those big contracts you guys are talking about are signed by 27-28 year old players. Sometimes you want to lead a player to free agency even just to show them nobody will ever pay them 10 million AAV.

His agent wants you to negotiate for Joe Sakic. He agrees completely with your assessment of value. Wow that’s a lot of money and term out of an ELC

Eventually, sure. But his bridge deal will be 3 years, 7-8 million.

He'll be signing a 3 year bridge like Werenski and McAvoy did with higher cap hit.

Thinking $7M is realistic assumption.

The guy has nothing but assists on his name this year, and it's particularly because he gets to play so much with the top guys in COL. That $12M offer is an absolute joke.

Likely a bridge agreement to retain his RFA rights

Nah, you want to bridge him (3 years) so Avs can retain the rights and then re-sign him for a max term (8 years) ensuring he will be a Avs player his entire career. Max terming him in the summer would keep him for 8 years but after that a good chance he's done. A franchise defensive player like Makar, you want to retain him for his career (11 years) IMO versus 8 years.

Chabot’s deal is the baseline. Personally I think Sakic doesn’t want to do a bridge then the Avs are doing MacKinnon and Byram one year and Makar the next. I think they end up in the 8x10 range, enough contracts fall of the books like Compher and Johnson that helps.
