If the worst team in the league doesn't want most of these guys, good teams won't want them either. The team just needs to suck it up for this season, all these guys are on expiring contracts, so they are gone anyway.

He's actually got decent possession numbers, and has been playing 16 minutes per game. I feel like he's got value to a team (if you're retaining on him) who can plug him in at 3C.

It might make more sense to just keep him.

Stepan's only owed $2MM in salary, but even at 50% retained, he carries a $3.25MM cap hit, which is an average 3C. Since Ottawa would retain 50% of the salary, or $1MM, keeping the other $1MM might be cheaper than taking a contract back to fit Stepan under the acquiring teams cap.

So keep Stepan, play him at 4C, let him walk at the end of the season, and eat crow for making the trade in the first place.
