I'm a Habs fan, so here's who I would protect right now. (Question: Do you need to protect players that are UFA's after the season)

Reminder:
You can protect either 7 forwards, 3 D-men, and a goalie or 8 skaters and a goalie

Leafs

Matthews
Marner
tavares
nylander
Holl
Rielly
Brodie
Campbell (because I doubt they take UFA Freddie)
Muzzin

Not gonna take UFA Freddie. Mikheyev exempt. UFA Hyman would just resign anyways so they won't take him. Leaves Kerfoot or Dermott which would be fine.

Laine / Domi / Bjorkstrand / Jenner / Nyquist / Atkinson / Roslovic
Werenski / Jones / Gavrikov
Korpisalo

Jackets have a lot of UFA's and young/exempt players
The best options that will probably be available for Seattle would be Gerbe, Robinson, or Kukan

Assuming Tampa forgoes trading for considerations:

Kucherov
Point
Stamkos
Cirelli
Hedman
Sergachev
Cernak
Foote
Vasy

Maybe swap Foote for McDonagh since the org thinks the world of him.

The big exempt for CBJ is Elvis because if he wasn't exempt Seattle most likely would have taken the goalie you didn't protect. (Elvis or Korpisalo)

Rico, Steel, Rakell, Jones, Milano, Terry, Heinen (Assuming Lundestrom doesn't hit requirements)
Fowler, Hampus, Manson
Gibby

Re sign Getz to 2 x $5ish after the expansion draft. Seattle would be between Silfverberg, Larsson and Shatty (likely takes Silfverberg). Silf has some value, but clearing that cap hit would allow the Ducks to try and get someone with more offensive upside (Which is what they need right now).

This also assumes that Silf's M-NTC doesn't stop the Ducks from exposing him.

McDonagh is an interesting case for TB since he has 5 years left on his deal and is already 31. I think it depends on what the TB org. thinks Foote can become

Batherson, Drake
Brown, Connor
Brown, Logan
Dadonov, Evgeni
Tierney, Chris
Tkachuk, Brady
White, Colin

Chabot, Thomas
Wolanin, Christian
Zaitsev, Nikita

Murray, Matt

I expect to lose either Nick Paul or Joey Daccord

I'm hoping the Sens trade Tierney for a defenceman they can protect over Wolanin, and then protect Nick Paul.

For Oilers:

McDavid
Draisaitl
RNH (assuming he signs an extension)
Yamamoto
Kahun
Puljujarvi
Benson/Archibald
Nurse
Bear
C. Jones
Koskinen

Klefbom could be deemed exempt due to a shoulder injury that they could argue is career threatening. No guarantee he plays next season.
I've posted about this before but if I am Holland I would offer a 1st + a prospect like Benson for Seattle to take the final 2 years of Neal's contract.

Definitely. Imagine how many "injuries" there'd be if all you had to do to create more protection spots was to have a player on LTIR.

Appleton/Harkins/forward we trade for.

JMo
DeMelo
Pionk

Helle

Don't protect Lowry or Stastny but probably try to sign both after the expansion draft.

TBD if it's Appleton or Harkins that gets the last protection slot. The other interesting option for the Jets is to trade for another forward and protect them exposing both Appleton/Harkins.

CGY is definitely in an interesting situation where whichever direction they decide to go it seems like they'd be giving up an impact player. (Bennett or Gio)

Well lots of players go on LTIR, but most aren't for the full season. This is in the CapFriendly Expansion Draft FAQ "Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed the previous 60+ consecutive games due to an injury, do not meet the criteria set forth by the league in respect to the minimum exposure requirements for players, and in certain cases these players may even be deemed as exempt from the Expansion Draft selection process." idk if this counts for the playoffs that he should be playing in or if the number of 60+ will go down with the shortened season. It is not a career threatening though so idk.

Yeah really all hinges on Klef's status. Honestly, if his career is deemed threatened and he is exempt and unlikely to play next season, I'd want to see the Oil acquire and protect an even better Dman than Jones from a team that has 4 good D and more than 4 great forwards. Colorado comes to mind, if they value their 5th forward more than their 4th dman, which I think is likely since they have Byram and Timmins at the ready. One of Graves or Toews perhaps. I have to imagine they want to resign Landeskog, and maybe Saad, but at the very least their 5th fwd would be Burakovsky or Kadri, who may be more valuable to them than one of Graves or Toews.

Agree with all of this, I honestly see the Jets trading for a rental 2nd line winger at the TDL, so I think we’ll end up losing Appleton as they’ll protect Harkins.

You don’t have to protect, career ending injuries though so yes you have to protect Kucherov.
