Description
Is it painful....of course it is. What do you think Jesus is gonna walk on water and perform a miracle here.
But it gets you out of 3 bad long term contracts and allows you to kill off all the bad cap space and rebuild. The only contract you have to worry about moving next is EK.

I didn't want to move Couture, but you needed cap space and he's gonna be 32 with this team going nowhere. Why hold onto that contract till he's to old to help, when the team is finally ready to turn it around.

THe MTLBurns trade is Seattle expansion draft, should note that.

That Couture deal just won't work for MTL. $8M is just too much for another 30+ player.

It's a win now move for MTL. This is the best chance they are going to get to win a cup. You can deal with the cap issues later. Maybe send him to Seattle or whatever.

Why does NJ do that? They give up Subban and all they get is 50% of Vlasic's contract? What's the point?

they shed a 9 million dead weight contract while Hughes is on his rookie deal for 2 years aka their fist window to win a cup if hughes is having his "break out party" like they like to say. It's 3.5 mil it adds up to like 21 million Pernell is 18 million.
The money isn't off by a ton and it's spread out over a longer period. So it maximizes that rookie deal. Clearly over the long run you're stuck with it.

I get that but the extensions to Suzuki, KK and Romanov are going to be coming quick and a lot of $ are already going to Weber, Petry, Gallagher and Price.

Losing one or more of the young players that are driving the team's success right now for an upgrade in an area that the team isn't struggling in just doesn't make sense to me.

You don't get it, you move him. Seattle would love a 1C.

of course it's not, that isn't the point. The point is to give the team a fresh slate and remove the dead weight aging players on huge contracts.

Maybe... You'd have to be pretty certain that he's the guy they'd be targeting.

Also MTL would likely need to send Byron over as well since they are just about as close to zero cap space as it gets.

That Subban contract expires when Hughes will need a new one, so no real issue for them. I have a hard time seeing NJ do this.

that's not really the point. It opens up 5.5 million for them to get him help while on a rookie deal.

Fair, but I dont see them being a competitive team just yet. My opinion though.

I'm sure they could figure that out. I don't see it as a deal breaker

well yeah, that's what happens when you pay pernell there 9 million. You lose basically 1/8 of your cap on dead weight and you're gonna suck.

They have a PP QB in Ty Smith so not much need for a 9M Subban. 5M+ their 6M of current space could get them a few solid players... Their G is legit and they just need to fill a few gaps that 11M could easily do... Also they haven't had Hischier in their line up yet... so add the 2C and a stay at home D and solid winger... that is competitive

I dont think Fitzgerald is on that time table ... I'd agree with the original reply that NJ would rather ride out PKs contract & give the prospects (of which they have many) another year to mature. When Holtz, Foote, Bahl, Walsh, Mercer et al arrive, I think that's when Fitzgerald looks to supplement with a high level veteran or two. Even with a Hughes & Blackwood extention, they should have room. They have no long term commitments now, outside Hischier.

They are 1 point out of a playoff position with a game in hand. Haven't had their 2C yet who is a fantastic 2 way player and been missing their 1G the last 4 games I think. Add a winger like Granlund and maybe a depth D like Staal for his PK abilities and that's a pretty solid roster going into playoffs even with how young they are. They need the experience of being smashed in the playoffs to understand how they need to play the following few years.. Now I said granlund and staal as examples but they could get Hall and Ekholm if they wanted. Will they win the cup, probably not but why not try to get 2 or 3 rounds deep

That division is brutal, even if they add, I cant imagine NJ making top 4 in the East. Fitzgerald and ownership has been preaching patience. They (Shero) tried the quick fix add for playoff drive in Hall's MVP year & then the following season, which flamed out. I suspect those scars are still there & they will stick to the plan.
