Ottawa could've grabbed him on waivers if they wanted to without giving up anything. DeAngelo's value at this point is pretty much zero after finding out what occurred in the locker room.

Yes you are right they could have gotten him for “free” but this deal has us retaining salary and we take back a guy making 6.5

Ottawa doesn’t save anything. They are both owed $2MM this season, after the retained amount is factored. Ottawa would then owe DeAngelo $3MM next season whereas they wouldn’t owe Stepan anything. Ottawa pays more.

Nobody wants a 4.8mill contract. Rangers can retain half making him only 2.4mill. From how I see it if a team has a **** contract and wants it gone rangers can retain half his salary and take on that contract.
