Colorado Expansion Draft trade explained and set up for next season

Created by: Oilyboy
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 4, 2021
Published: Feb. 4, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming Klef still looks to be out long term/potentially ending his career by the Expansion Draft.

If Colorado will be forced to expose a guy like Graves anyway. This way the could get a pick for him, and either keep Jones for depth D or lose him and keep all of their Fwds intact.

Oilers protect 7-3-1: McD, Drai, Nuge, Yam, Pulju, Kahun, Archibald, Nurse, Bear, Graves, Koski

If COL is going to lose Gravy no matter what (ie Seattle) , then why would they under sell him to EDM to turn around and lose a second player to Seattle plus the 3rd they got from you to protect another D man. When all they need to do is let Seattle take Gravy, maybe give them our third, and not lose a second player. Seems better for the AVS not to do this.

Fai enough. I think it would make sense to send Jones and a pick back instead, so they at the very least end up with a pick, and either Jones for depth D or all of tehir fwds intact.

Umm why doesn’t avs sell him to a higher bidder there is a number of teams that are in better expansion situation that can offer better. I also don’t understand at all why larsson seems to get the short end of the stick with fans. Do people not watch and pay attention to his contributions? If your watching the games and don’t like what your seeing of him perhaps you need a new tv cause he’s doing some heavy lifting as he’s always done.

I watch all the games. don't love or hate what Larsson brings. I could totally see Larsson resigned there instead of Savard. I'm basically just worried Larsson will be out a lot over the next few years. He seems to be slowing down at 28 and I don't see that turning around. Savard seems able to handle more minutes at this point.

This really didn't make the offer better. From the Avs point of view, you want to trade a guy that has proved he can do and excel at top 4 mins for a guy that would sit in the stands and a 5th. Why do this? Try a forward at least and maybe a better pick. This is not good for the Avs.

But is it worse than just losing Graves for nothing as some are suggesting? Expansion sucks, if you think of these trades as for regular value you will be disappointed. Of course if it was straight across with no expansion thoughts, I'd start at Jones, a 2nd and a fwd prospect. But that's not where the teams will be sitting if this came about.

About the last thing the Avs need is depth d. Dmen under contract for NEXT season or RFA
Makar, Byram, Girard, Toews, Johnson, Graves, Timmins, Barron, McDonald, Helleson. Even taking Graves out that’s 9 deep.

Your right the Avs are going to take it in the draft. They have right now 4 guys deep that can slot that top 4, just LHD not looking at the 2 RHDs. I would rather just lose 1top4/middle6 player for nothing than lose 2 top4/middle6 players for a non roster player and a 5th. Seattle is still going to take one.

Fair enough. Having 5-6 top 4 dmen and about 10 top 9 forwards going into the draft sure makes this all easier for a team, even when a good player will be lost. Teams may consider themselves lucky if they don't lose a good player but...really that just means they have no depth (like when the Oilers lost Reinhart lol). This will really hurt the teams that have exactly 4 top four dmen and 9 top 9 forwards with no ready replacements.

I don't hate a Larsson resigning but at what term and cap hit. If we can get him at something starting with a 2 i wouldn't mind him on 3rd pairing mentoring people like Broberg.
