If they finally played a good team and got exposed, what happened in 3 of the 4 games against Montréal?

They played a good team and they got exposed. Simple as that. That's what happens when your team's management is ****.

Because they're playing in their own division against other teams.

My point is that you said finally in the title in regards to tonight’s game, as if Montréal hasn’t done the exact same thing that Toronto did tonight.

This Canucks team cannot be giving up 5+ goals and expect to win on a regular basis. This team is poorly managed by JB and they need to find consistency. Oh, they're playing in a division with their own country's teams? Yeah, that doesn't mean ****. Trust me, dude. I gotta give credit to the Habs this year tho, they've broken out of their slumber against all of these other teams.

I mean hardly a fair fight when you have to face the core 4 + the new solid Leafs D + the resurgence of vintage superstar Jason Spezza

I gotta give credit to the Leafs, they've been great so far and we're 25% into the season. Great work from Sheldon Keefe on turning the ship around. Babcock wasn't getting them anywhere. I'm just saying that the Canucks can't be giving up 5+ goals a night and expect to win against teams like the Leafs and the Habs.

We gave you 3 wins. Team wasn't even competent against you guys because our own flaws.

Toronto is a much better team than Montreal. We got torched despite playing a much more well rounded game

I don't put the blame on Benning.

I was really content with the roster he iced this season. Didn't overpay markstrom or tanev, overpay anyone in FA - waited Vegas to get a solid defender...

Canucks fans are the most reactionary fans by a mile. This fanbase never thinks about tomorrow and is always concerned about what is at hand immediately. All these canucks fans dream of bring back toffoli and markstrom neglecting to realize the harm it has on some critical contracts next year.

Nobody predicted Pettersson disappearing this season. Nobody predicted the defense being *this* bad. These are locker room and chemistry issues. The effect of the guys leaving that did - its not so much the skill loss that hurts; its the effect they had on the other players in the room.

Schmidt doesn't work here at all (This is a Green issue - not a Benning issue). Hughes has regressed defensively. Myers is on the ice too much.... Benn has been the best defensive guy so far by a considerable margin - (He's been solid, but that says something about the remaining people).

The team itself needs to step up. No use pointing at Benning. He's paying for his past mistakes now, but did well not to dig his hole worse by having any more stupid contracts signed. Virtanen in hindsight should have been released - but just because Toffoli feeds on this team for goals doesn't mean he is some type of elite talent that Benning failed to sign.

Tldr;

This fanbase needs to quit being so terribly reactionary. It's a step back from last year, but at what benefit for next year? Lots! I'd rather suck this year to be competent for 4 more years than to screw up everything to be good this year at the expense of the future.

You're right, people are pointing fingers. I never wanted Markstrom back in Vancouver because of the hefty price tag that he was going to get and for expansion insurance. I'm not mad that he left because we needed to ensure Demko's protection in the expansion draft. Same with Tanev, though I wish we could have signed him to help us. What pissed me off was that we didn't sign Toffoli after that trade just months after he was signed. All I know is that someone is gonna get canned at some point. The Hughes-Benn seems to have worked pretty well from what I've seen, but I haven't been watching the games as much lately, just listening to them on the radio and I can understand the struggles.

I can say for one thing that Toffoli's impact on the team would be marginal. He wasn't a stand out player when he was here for all but maybe 2 games. It sucks that we lost him after so short, but nobody knew how the scene of the world would change. A risen cap and 20 more games in the season and a different narrative would be present. Gotta take the L here for the future and move on.

If toffoli didn't score a metric ton of goals against us, nobody would be saying anything. Toffoli will die off with time; he's not a goal per game player.

The issues are on the back end. People are not buying into the system - they are out of position; sloppy on the puck and all around slow. You'd expect a so-called improved defense to be BETTER than last year. Benning got them a true top pair defenseman, and now Schmidt looks like one of the worst players out there.

The chemistry is atrocious. Green needs to do whatever possible to get that back end engaged and committed.

Also; Why is Chatfield constantly in rather than Juolevi - Green.... really...

Essentially, even if we had Toffoli instead of Virtanen right now, this team would still be losing due to how bad the back end has been.

Honestly, I was expecting Brogan Rafferty in over Jalen Chatfield, but that probably wouldn't do much to help us. We need a defenseman that can play with some of our young guys, and a new coach now that you've mentioned it. I also agree with your points on a risen cap and more games.

Schmidt is NOT good on the left side. There's a reason Vegas and Washington used him on the right. But Green keeps sticking him on the left so that Chatfield (a worse defenseman that Juolevi) can play the right.
Because of Green's stubbornness, a good rookie is being held out and Schmidt is playing his off side.

Ideally:

Edler - Schmidt
Hughes - Benn / Hamonic
Juolevi - Myers
