This Bennett fascination reminds me of the love Kapanen gets. Kap would throw the odd hit, got in two fights and scored a big goal once while being fast. To many that's all they ever saw and needed to see to determine he was made of gold. Him being terrible defensively and non existent over half the time never registered. Bennett throws a few hits and has a couple good playoff runs and that is all people see. The 90% of his career where he's been utterly invisible doesn't exist.

Although I think Kapanen is better than you say, you make some valid points. When so many trying to dump cap, I'll don't know what Pens management were thinking when they traded 1st and the previous years 2nd rounder for 3.2m Kapanen. Couldn't the Pens sign a UFA for 3.2m and keep their picks? Heck Leafs 3.4m Johnsson was traded for an AHLer.
I got nothing against Bennett but his 2.55m cap hit is steep for a 4th liner. Even if can play 3rd line at times , seems like the Leafs have plenty of those guys. I'm betting his 2.55m cap doesn't get RFA qualified next summer
