Yes Toronto also turns it down. In terms of value, it's fair. Just both teams value these players differently. Toronto is trading their best defenseman who is a top 10 offensive defenseman in the nhl. Vancouver is not trading a young stud who is a top 10 offensive defenseman in the nhl. It's fun to think about, but both teams easily turn it down.

In terms of value it isn't even close lmaooo Hughes is 6 years younger than Reilly while playing at basically the same level currently

Yes, but I think you are forgetting the essentially 2 firsts.

In overall play maybe not but on the points side of the ice, 100% and it's not debatable.

Well, the points side of thing we don’t have to debate, because...they’re points. You can just look it up.

Since the 2014-2015 season (Rielly’s second year, no need to count his rookie season against him) he is 18th among d men in points. 27th in points per game (for d men with over 50 games). 26th in goals. 16th in assists.

So no, not top 10. Not really close

Gee, you expect a 19 year old defenseman to be at the same level he currently is? Cherry picking if I ever saw it. He's currently 4th in points. Last season he was not top ten level (or even close to it), but he had no real partners and was injured for a significant amount of time (he only got 27 point, but only played in 42 games), and that covid thing happened. The year before that he was unbelievable, and was robbed of a Norris finalist spot. And before that season (2018-19), he was 23. That's young. Plenty of top 10 defenseman in the league break out after the age of 23. I suppose if you really wanted to, you could try to say that's he's not top 10 on the offensive side of the ice, but you'd be ignorant and cherry picking your stats.

First of all, Rasmus Sandin is 20, he's easily going to be at least a top 4 dman later in his career, maybe top pair. Second of all, I agree Vancouver passes on this deal.

You’re saying I’m cherry picking???? I took his NHL career and just left off his rookie year. Sounds like all you want to talk about was the one stellar offensive season he had. If i wanted to cherry pick i would have taken out the one outlier of his career, which was the 72 point season. Aside from that he’s averaged five goals a season.

He’s a good player, he’s not top ten at anything.

Players improve over time. You can't expect a player to be the same from 19-23 as he is when he's 26 now. The best 2 seasons to look at are the last 3, if you want a proper guess of how good a player is and those last 3 years, Rielly had 52, 72, 27 points, not counting this season as he's only played 12 games (but might I add he looks every bit like the 2018-19 Rielly with 10 points in 12 games). He ranked 15th (tied for it), 3rd and 58th respectively (don't forget this season he had no real partner, and missed very significant time to injury). Add this up and you get 151 points, tied for 8th in the past 3 years (again, that's not even counting that he's tied for 4th this season). And since he missed time last year, he's tied for 6th in points percentages. Not at all a stretch to say he's a top ten offensive defenseman. It's actually a stretch to say he's not.

Okay, so I’m cherry picking, yet you just want to count the three seasons that support your argument, even though this is his 8th full season? Sure.

Also, he has not been good this year. A lot of leafs fans are on here saying it. He’s got some decent point totals, but then again, the team is clocking in at 3.69 goals per game playing against some butter soft competition.

There’s just no argument that rielly is a top ten d man in the NHL in any way.

You were the one who said that 3 seasons is the best to use. Remember? When we were debating about Laine? Besides, don't you see how weird it is if you count him at 19 and then players like Burns and Doughty and Karlsson, now not top 10 defenseman, are top 5? It's giving a false impression. He's a top 10 offensive defenseman. But think whatever you want. Iwink

I don’t really remember saying that about laine. It’s possible though, seeing as how he had four seasons, with one outlier. It’s a pretty standard concept to remove the outlier.

Maybe I’m thinking of another user, but I’m almost certain it was you, we were debating whether Laine or RNH was better.

That makes sense. RNH light years better. On a different planet. No argument to the contrary.

I don’t specifically remember saying looking at three years is best. I certainly didn’t mean that as some broad analytical tool. Might be because laine has a very limited sample size with one outlier? Not sure.

3 years does make sense when looking at how good a player is. You want a decent sample size but not too big.
