This is a step backwards for Ottawa.
That 2nd round pick is maybe four seasons away, or more. Look ad the 2016 and 2017 draft on hockeydb.com, and ask yourself, how many of these 31 guys drafted in the 2nd round are contributing to their team as a full time player today?
O’Connor might be a good player one day, but these Ottawa players are here now, and playing well enough that you want them.
Sanderson is a top5 pick, and will be ready sooner rather than later. It’s believed he’ll only spend one season at UND, and then transition to the pros with JBD and Pinto next season. He’ll be on the fast track. There’s a huge difference between top5 picks, picks chosen in the late 1st round, and 2nd round picks, when it comes to timetables, but there no set rule. Each player develops on their own timeline.
So basically, even a seemingly fair offer isn’t going to be accepted if it doesn’t make sense for the other team.
Pettersson is 24 and a top 4 LHD. Same age as Chabot. Signed long term, to a good, reasonable deal. Plays 20 plus minutes a game.
Jake Sanderson won’t be in the NHL for probably 2 more years. 20-21-22 years old. It’s different now with prospects and devolving them with not all leagues up and running. And Probably 3 more years b4 he’s an everyday pairing. D-men definitely take longer to develop too. They don’t just jump in and play 20 minutes a night in the NHL.
OConnor is 22 years old and is playing in the NHL this season. For the Penguins, not a rebuilding team, a team that will take every opportunity to compete for play-offs and then a SC. Obviously they trust he’s NHL ready and can contribute consistently to a NHL play-off caliber team. He won a roster spot out of camp.
Again, he was the Ivy League player of the year last year(or the last year college hockey played a full season). He might be good??
