Wrong!
Your rhetoric is pathetic.
White's contract might run one season less, but Matheson will be 32 at the end of his contract, and White will be 28, that's a huge difference in term. White will come much closer to his salary of $4.75MM starting next season, than Matheson will come to his $5, $4, and then three seasons of $6.75MM, at age 29-32, that's ridiculous. Ottawa can't afford that much salary for the way Matheson plays. Also, White is likely to be traded in 23/24, to a team with deeper pockets, and the team will deal with the value at that point.
Comparing Matheson's $32MM owed to Gudbranson's $4MM owed, is another ridiculous comparison.
1st of all A. 32 isn't old for a defenseman. So to think Matheson's age is the issue here is ludacris.
B. saying White will be traded is no different than saying Matheson will be traded, which at this point in time is much more likely given the play of both, because,
C. we aren't talking about Guddy's 4 million. Guddy went with 3 years on that contract. From VAN > PIT>ANA>OTT.
which if anything goes to show the movability of a defense man, even one people view as a "bad" contract. Which is the point I was making. That not only was he moved, but without bad cap coming back.
3x4 ain't really much worse than 5x4.
So it's not like defensemen are unmovable. Now you won't see Bad winger contracts move like that.
Meanwhile, good luck finding comparable wingrers who are like 10 goal 20 point guys on 4.75 million contracts that are moved that easily.
