Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 9, 2021
Published: Feb. 9, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is the game plan. It`s pretty clear now.

This year: Be aggressive, make moves to win this year.
Result: If Pens get to the Semis or beyond, they have decisions to make. If they don`t make the semis then this team is getting retooled. That means 71 and 58 are gone. They are giving them one last shot to prove they can win and if not it`s a new era.

Acquiring Sam Bennett is going to be the first move. Was a Burke draft pick. Fits what they want to do both now and in the future.

Aight here we go.

The Ottawa trade, while likely suitable in value, isn't great for Ottawa positionally. Sadly, White is arguably Ottawa's best center right now as Stepan wants to move back to the US, Norris is a rookie experiencing big even strength struggles, and Chris Tierney is an enigma that somehow produces while having awful metrics. Until Stützle is moved there, or Logan Brown is given an extended look to take the spot, or one of Pinto or Norris develops into the role (unlikely), White will hold a ton of value for the Sens as their de facto 1C. Otherwise he's an okay middle 6 player signed longterm who has some upside and reliable defensive IQ that's translated well in the past when the team was stronger.

On D though, the Sens have Chabot, Brännström, Wolanin and Reilly down the left side. It's not great and Pettersson is almost certainly an upgrade at the position, but he will forever be behind Chabot and could already be behind Brännström depending how Pettersson would look in DJ's system (especially since Erik started the season very strong). In the prospect pool, the Sens have Sanderson who also plays on the left side and so they've already caused a logjam with their 3 biggest D of the future being on the same side. It's poor asset management to go out and trade for another LHD that at best plays on their 2nd pair as a #4 for this year alone, and very quickly gets replaced and pushed to a 3rd pairing D when Sanderson comes in. Especially when, again, as mentioned, they'd be trading a guy who is currently their 1C. Down the line White likely projects as a 3C, but he's too important right now.

As an aside, it's also really humourous how frequently Pens fans make White for Pettersson trades and then when Sens fans ( @csick @PLDGEY @sensibleguy ) say that Ottawa might not be interested because of positional strength, you guys get all defensive and go "well White is garbage anyways, have fun staying bad, SENS SUCK PENS RULE, KAPPA DELTA PSY FOREVER BABY LET IT RIDE YEAAAA". If he's so bad, why is it always you guys trying to trade for him? If Pettersson is so good, maybe you should keep him for your depleted D core or to cover for Matheson and Ceci. Seems the Pens are in 23rd right now without a 1st round pick, which was a song the Sens were singing not so long ago. The responses give off the same vibes as those guys who get rejected by girls and then go "well you're fat and ugly anyways".

I was the one who started the White/MP trade months ago and at the time Sens fans agreed it was a good deal. Move Brannstrom to the right side (where he should be anyways) and have MP play with him on the second pair. When Sanderson is ready to be an impact player in 2-3 years MP can either slide to the 3rd pair or you can move him easily. If not, then sure, keep him. Pitt has a lot of options. I have been on this trade for a long time because it genuinely improves both teams and fills a need for both.

I think it is important to get Murray on track. Adding a dman that can help him right now is important. White is most definitely an expendable piece as he isn`t going to be your go-to guy ever.

The Sens are garbage though, you can`t deny that and it`s not an issue because they are rebuilding. They need to make moves for right now and in the future and doing this deal just makes sense especially considering the contracts are similar.

This sums it all up perfectly, you are trying to force a trade that might have made sense months, or even weeks ago, but doesn't anymore. It only thing that ever stays the same is that things always change. Ottawa doesn't need Pettersson anymore, repeat that to yourself, outloud, over and over again.

What has changed from a month or weeks ago? They have continued to lose, they still don`t have any hope on D besides Chabot and the coach is rumoured to not like Brannstrom. White has scored *checks notes* 2G and 2A? WOW! The savior of Ottawa has risen!!!

They absolutely need MP more than they need White. Right now. Tomorrow. Last week. Next month. Next Year. So on and so on.

If it ABSOLUTELY itsn`t white. Then let it be Brown, Tierney or maybe a few others but you would need to add if that was the case. Perhaps Tierney and Reilly and a mid pick. Nonetheless White-MP straight swap makes the most sense, especially right now for salary cap reasons.

Don't look at this as black and white, look at it as grey. What were the scores from the games out West, and what have been the scores of the last four games? That's mostly because of the addition of Zub and Brannstrom. I don't care what you think of Pettersson, he's not replacing either of those guys, and Ottawa's not giving an asset for someone they don't need, ANYMORE!!!!

Ottawa doesn't need Pettersson, and they do need White, Tierney, Brown, the point is, they don't need Pettersson, for any package.

Alright, well, then we are back to square 1. Continue to lose, break Murray`s confidence and fail to gain any value for the huge group of young forwards many of which do not fit in the long-term plans of Ottawas future.

Pitt can make a different deal, probably for a better player, but I have been gunning for this as I thought it is the most realistic and best fit for both. If not, then so be it. We are probably better off that way anyways. But Ottawa is most definitely worse off not making this deal.

You're hurting my feelings, how old are you, using an 8th grade argument like that? lol

Try thinking like an adult, with logic and not emotions. The Sens don't want your player, just move on, grow up and move on, it's not the end of the world because, this isn't real, it's just conversation. This is chat about hockey, and none of these trades will ever happen, so don't be upset that yours isn't considered a good trade. Look for another team to trade Pettersson to, maybe Calgary for Bennett. I haven't looked at the Calgary situation, but rumour has it Bennett is available. Target him.
