Mathews is ridiculously good but I'll say what I have always said, his contract is an issue. At that money he should be locked in for 6 years, the fact that he only has 3 years after this one is worrisome. Always felt like he wants to be out of Canada and not be the spotlight of a big market. So its a no for the Habs, they would want more long term security which Suzuki and Anderson give you

I think he likes the pressure of playing well, I dont think he likes the pressure of 50 media guys wanting quotes all the time. I just look at his contract and to me, if he wanted to stay in Toronto he would have taken something like Mcdavid did. Instead he went for a contract that walks him to FA as soon as possible and deliberately priced himself out of Toronto being able to afford him for any of his FA years. Thats not guy who seems like he wants to stay.

If they start the rebuild now they’ll have some good prospects to build around Matthews and Hayton

we'll see i disagree, i think alot of that comes from being a habs fan and youre kinda hoping he leaves so you wanna believe he is. everyone has him going pegged to arizona, but theyre terrible, on the ice and off the ice, hes not gonna go toa smaller market team just to get out of the spotlight. thats notion is bs.

they have 3 years with no firsts this year or last year, awfully run franchise, leafs have a way better prospect pool than arizona

I agree they suck but thats apart of the game and part of being the best player on the team, he handles it well

only reason people say arizona is because hes from there and he tavares did it, no other reason, and tavares didnt go home just to go home, how many star players go home just because its home?

I never said Arizona, of course us Habs fans want him to go to the West he picks Careys corners every game we play each other. But i dont know how Leaf fans are happy that the best player to ever play for their franchise got a contract that gives him all the power and didnt buy up any of his FA years. At the money he got he should have been 6 years, instead Dubas caved. The rumors of him wanting 13-14 for 7 or 8 years should have troubled the fans because he was basically saying he was more valuable then McDavid if Toronto wanted him to stay, which shouldnt have been the case.

I think a team gives him the full 14% of the cap he can ask for when the time comes, dont think Toronto will be able to offer it unless Reilly, Anderson and some other pieces are gone. All in all I think he walks at the end of that contract to a team with less media demands and where he can actually go out inside the city and not be recognized.

i see where your coming from but it can also be stemmed from hes able to sign for even more when his contract is up, it was signed pre covid so that changes that, and Rumours is the key word you said.
ive never heard those rumours and unless it comes from a credible source theres no reason to beleive it. IF he leaves and thats a big IF, it will be too a contender that gives him the best chance of winning a cup, nothing to so with getting out of the media spotlight, hes not a mental midget

I think a lot depends on the leafs success over his next three years if he doesn’t win a cup he’s gone, if he wins one maybe he’s hungry for a second and stays, if he wins two maybe he’s content to head home and try for a 3rd with a new team

Covid is going to make things so interesting for teams. Young guys off ELCs need raises, star players will want raises, gonna be the middle guys that get squeezed. Well by rumors I meant the usual twitter reporters Dreger, Lebrun etc all said that his FA years were priced above Mcdavids AAV. I do wonder if his agent was wanting a NBA star type career for him, short term contracts so that every 4 years he just reups his max amount instead of being locked in for so long, which ultimately make your career earnings sky rocket but we will see
