2020-21 Leafs - With respect to Downtown Sports

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 13, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I am always overthinking these and actually started this AGM 2 weeks ago and didn't post it but just watched DownTown Sports YouTube video and was surprised a how close it was to what I was thinking so I figured I would get it up.

---He added the idea of Pearson being a Hyman clone which I really like so I added a 2nd trade with Vancouver...---

.................................................................................................................
Getting ready for the playoffs by adding more SC experience while not wanting to mess up the Seattle Expansion Draft.

I am trying to calculate the accrued Cap Space for the Leafs to see when they could pull something off with the other teams using retention. I believe at that point in the season the Cap remaining vs the Cap space accrued more than works but this site shows -$24,741 over so I don't know...

Key Dates:

July 21st - Seattle Expansion Draft
July 23-24 Entry Draft (possibly postponed)
July 28th - UFA Period

Protect 8 Skaters and 1 Goalie

Matthews
Tavares
Marner
Nylander
Rielly
Brodie
Muzzin
Holl
Campbell

Almost everyone is either exempt or a UFA except: (M=Meets Requirements)
F - (M)Kerfoot - traded away, (M)Engvall, Brooks, Anderson, (M)Deslaurier - traded for
D- Dermott - sign and expose??
G - (M)Hutchinson

***WILDCARD*** We will probably lose Kerfoot in the Seattle Expansion draft so...
... let's try to trade Kerfoot and Vesey for a UFA 3rd line center
- (I wanted Lowry, but could be past SC winner E Staal or maybe past SC winner Getzlaf with retention if we offered a big enough asset, etc ).

If we don't trade Kerfoot then I expect Kerfoot or Dermott is getting picked by Seattle anyway so Kerfoot is probably gone either way.
****************************

Sign all UFAs after July 21st
- Sign Hyman to an 8 year contract allowing a lower AAV to allow him to retire a Leaf at 36 years old
- Sign Simmonds to a 3 year contract
- See if Spezza wants another league minimum 1 year contract
- Try to sign Bogosian for 2 - 3 years
- I am one of the few Leaf fans who would like to re-sign Andersen 5 x $5 MIL until 36 years old

Thanks, but neither Kerfoot nor Vesey fits our needs at RW and RD. And I'd be curious to know whether you can retain different amounts of cap hit and salary, because Getzlaf is only owed under $3 million right now.

You can't in terms of percentage.

So the retention would be $4,125,000 on the cap hit and $1.5 million on the compensation?

Yes, 50% of cap hit and 50% of remaining salary; so assuming he's owed $3m for the remainder of the year, that would be accurate. This is only to the best of my knowledge, of course.

Well, the best of your knowledge, at least on this subject, is a LOT better than mine.

Thanks, but I still had to double check.

It appears that the same percentage rule is correct.

That is how I understand it as well. The Cap Hit obviously is what we are most concerned with as money for the remaining salary really isn't an issue in Toronto.

I do like Kerfoot. Maybe switching Kerfoot and Liljegren in the trades might work better for Anaheim's needs. Sending Kerfoot home to British Columbia and giving Anaheim arete handed defenceman that is expansion draft exempt and contains a lot of upside.

Pearson is worth at best a salary going back (like Vesey), a 2nd round pick and a 4th round pick. And thatd be if Vancouver retained some salary. Definately not worth their top RD prospect

Liljegren for Getzlaf is a great idea.
