All not ready but 22-23 is right around the corner

Created by: Opie

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 14, 2021
Published: Feb. 15, 2021

Description
I know there are others in the pipeline, but this is the team that I hope makes its way to NJ in 3 years (some recency bias on the lines with the veterans) ... also I didn't bother giving any thought to the contracts. Its just current young players under LT control & prospects.

Expect to add to that a first round defenseman in the 21 draft. Could the Lottery drop a Power, Hughes or Edvinsson on the NJ Blueline? That would be something.

Pretty high right now. He was looking like a bust before the season but with the way he has been playing, Devils aren't planning on trading him. Maybe try Zacha instead. His value could be anywhere from a second to a first + prospect

Love the teams' future. I don't really see Zacha on the team next year, with guys like Thompson, Mcleod, Yegor, etc competing for a center spot. Also a suggestion for the lines but put Holtz and Bratt together, they practice together in Sweden and might have really good chemistry. Love that defense too.

My view of future roster....

Forwards
I think Sharangovich sticks at #3 or #4 Center (and on 1st PK unit). Mcleod/Zacha at other spot (am guessing one gets moved eventually)
Tyce Thompson is RW at Providence (chance we see him as early as this season if they offer playing time to get him to sign after Providence season is over).
The biggest wild card for NJD will be Arseni Gritsyuk, who has top-6 upside and figures to arrive summer of 2022 or 2023 (will probably play as left-shot RW). While Russian 1st line at WJC got most of the attention (Amirov-Khusnutdinov-Podkolzin), Gritsyuk was quietly 4th on team in scoring and 1st in +/-.
Possible roster bubble: Marian Studenic (another left-shot RW); Jaromir Pytlik (if can adapt more to AHL/NHL game); Maltsev (at least due to versatility).

Defensemen
Okhotyuk is currently ahead of Misyul on depth chart (he is probably even with Bahl at this point...both 19-year olds in AHL).
Case McCarthy, who is now one the better shut-down RHDs in NCAA, could be 3rd RHD by then.
Roster Bubble: Yegor Zaitsev (2nd in KHL in hits/60); Michael Vukojevic (a bigger more offensive d-man); Ethan Edwards (Michigan-bound offensive d-man, is now up to 5'11", 176 lbs from starting his draft year at 5'9", 160 lbs)

Gritsyuk was my last add, but I dropped him, mainly because it was getting too crowded. I agree he was one of Russia's more noticeable guys during the tournament ... keep seeing concerns about his size, which seems strange in this day and age, but he certainly needs to bulk up more. Maybe he takes a bit more time.

I'm a little skeptical about Thompson's skills at the NHL level, but he proved the doubters wrong early at Providence. Hope he can do the same in NJ. He'd probably be a wing at AHL/NHL.
Devil liked this.

He is currently listed at 5'11" and 175 lbs on KHL roster. Was drafted at 5'10" and 168 lbs.
And one of his strengths is pulling the puck off the boards (bit like Hischier)...so I am not too worried about him getting over-powered.
In his draft +1 season, he matched scoring numbers with line-mate Chinahkov (who was taken in 1st round in 2020 as overager).
This year he has bounced around between three levels (Russian equivalent to NHL, AHl, and Junior).
He has to finish this year and next season on his contract. By 2022-23, and his contract is up, he should be ready.

He is going to be a gem.

Hope so ... saw that he bounced three levels last season, like you say, definitely worried me ... but he was noticeable in all the WJC games & honestly, it was then I reconsidered him after writing him off a bit after last season.

I dont take much from listed weights / heights ... I always think that stuff is manipulated / BS. If he's put on some muscle, great... your comments regardong his play along the boards is much more important. Shows playing strength & tenacity, regardless of bulk or lack there of.

Is it just me, or do the Russians seem to have more players who like to play off wing than all the other countries combined. What's up with that?

Yes! All European hockey has more off-hand wingers. More *****-crossing, cutting towards middle from wing, more lateral movement, etc. Bigger ice surfaces allow. Some will say they prefer to start the play on one side and finish on other....ie, so a lefty would start on right wing, cutting cross middle to get shot in. North American hockey is more straight lines and less carrying of puck. They stylistic differences is more apparent in Junior leagues.
