Maybe the Sharks wouldn't been that much better, but long term they would have much more cap spent more wisely than Karlsson. Plus the additional draft picks. Wilson overpaid to get Karlsson for Just one season, but Sharks did go to Cup Final. But like so many other GMs, he tried to justify a trade by signing Karlsson (in this case) to an extension. Yuck.

Sharks only got to the conference finals with Karlsson in 2018-19. He got traded in september 2018 so wasn't there in 2016 when SJ made the final.

For as much criticism that Dorion gets, he pulled off a master-stroke in hindsight by not resigning Karlsson.

You're right. Remember the Sens went to the Conference Finals, I believe 2017. The following year they added Duchene to try to get them "over the top". But for so reason the team got worse.
For the Sens tried to get better and spend $$$$ but it didn't work. When it became obvious EK wasn't resigning the following season....and really has play had fallen off, Sens made a great trade.
Same wih Stone later in year....Sens weren't making the playoffs and Stone wasn't resigning, so they traded him. Same with Duchene...they recovered some their losses with the Columbus trade.
So the next few years we'll see what Ottawa does with those draft picks acquired, and the cap space they have.

All Dorion did was getting some kind of return for the guy. And for the record, it was considered first to be an extremely bad trade from the guy.

Naturally no one could've expected Sharks, or EK for that matter, to flop like that afterwards.

Whilst Dorion was right in hindsight to trade Karlsson, he probably could have gotten a better return. He got a bit lucky that the 1st turned into a top 3 pick, just like Sakic with the Byram pick.

The Stone trade was terrible for Ottawa. Brannstrom and a late 2nd (that they spent on an overager in Sokolov) isn't a great return on one of the best wingers in the game.

Everybody new UFA Stone wasn't going to resign....so I imagine Dorion took the best offer. How much more could they have got for a rental.?

Vegas signed him pretty soon after. Dorion could have insisted on a better return from them as it was effectively almost a sign-and-trade.

- Both team acquried a disgruntled good players and unknowingly giving up top prospects. I bet neither Dorion nor Sakic believed, at the time trade were made, they would get Stutzle and Byram respectively
- Both disgruntled player of both trade ended up giving their blessing despite wanting out of the team they used to love. (Duchene being a diehard Avs fan growing up and Karlsson seemed like he loves Ottawa as much as Alfredsson)

But if you think about it, Mark Stone trade is a disaster because Vegas technically gave up way more to acquire Paciorety.
