Oilers 21 Off Season

Created by: newmy
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2021
Published: Feb. 15, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This assumes:

- Klefbom comes back... if not, shift all the LD up one and sign Koekkoek (essentially the same defensive line up as the current season).

- Caleb Jones / William Lagesson gets taken by the Krakken (I’ve put Jones in LTIR to capture this).

- Don’t buy out Neal... if the Oilers can put a good team together without having to buy him out, then perfect. Dead cap space in today’s NHL can kill a team. If they buy him out this season... that’s 4 years of $2.0MM dead cap. Brutal. The Oilers are slowly crawling out of cap hell... don’t make it worse or prolong the process.

- That third line would be a fun high energy line with offensive upside... if Holloway isn’t ready, send him to AHL, and put JJ with Archibald and Ennis again making our fourth line Kassian, Neal and Turris (expensive fourth line but a decent one).

- The Oilers don’t have any prospects that’ll be long term solutions for goalie... so maybe it’s time they exhaust some assets to get a solid, long-term solution for a goalie that will help now, and bring stability for years to come. It’s a lot to give up... but Gibson is an incredibly high quality goalie and would be amazing behind that Oilers team. That said, in all honesty, despite being a lot to give up, I have no idea if Anaheim would except this either.

Solid No from ANA

I don’t necessarily disagree... but why? I don’t know enough about ANA to understand what it would take to pry Gibson away.

having no draft picks is a horrible idea.

I used to feel the same about a Neal buyout, but I am slowly starting to change my view on it.. it's not really dead cap for the first 2 years since they will be saving almost 4M for those 2 years. And then 1.9 for 2 years after. 1.9 isn't terrible.. if the buyout is the difference in the Oilers making space for a top 6 fwd, top D or top G this offseason, then I think its worth it. McDavid and Drai have 4 and 5 years respectively after this season. It's time to start going for it a bit.

I personally think Gibson is one of the best and underrated goalies in the league and Koskinen isn't even on the same level, those 2 picks will likely be higher ones too. I think if they want Gibson they need to add a high end prospect but that's just my opinion.

I would imagine the creator added Koskinen for cap reasons. The return is the two first round draft picks, which I think is a lot for a goalie from a team that should seriously consider rebuilding. But swap a first with a few prospects may get it done. Also Gibson isn't underrated, I think everyone knows exactly who is a and what they would be getting at this point. Also just my imo. I want to they Oilers to trade for him and I would be okay if they paid a steep price to do so but not over pay.

I agree ANA would probably not be interested in a convo unless Broberg was involved. Koski, Broberg and a 1st sounds about right as the starting basis. If ANA values Broberg as the 8th overall product he was, then definitely he's worth as much as what is likely a late 1st and a 2nd from the Oil. I think they ANA would insist on Rodrigue in place of Wells as well, just by potential to actually be an NHL goalie. So, not saying I go for it, but I think perhaps a trade ANA would go for is:

Gibson

for

Koskinen, Broberg, Rodrigue and 2022 1st.

I don't do it as the Oilers since I think if Klef is out next season (and then likely forever), Broberg will be extremely important for the team, especially with the risk a contract with Nurse doesn't happen and he walks to UFA in 2 seasons. Keeping Koskinen and getting a competent tandem goalie to platoon until Rodrigue or Konovalov work out well enough (fingers crossed)is probably more realistic. Or a trade for a slightly less hot commodity, like Darcy Kuemper.
