Leafs decline this. No need for any of those 3 pieces.

Don't think it's a bad trade but I imagine TOR would say if we're moving Nylander, we can probably find a younger RHD that fits our youth. Letang is 33 and has 1 more year on his deal after this one.

The only reason the Leafs would make the deal, is get more cap space. About 2.5m. Could be a deal, though the Leafs don't need the pieces that badly.
How about this if the Pens want Nylander and give the Leafs 2.5m in cap space. Nylander for Kapanen (Pens retain 1m) and a second rounder.

I never knew John Marino changed his name to Kris Letang, or Mark Jankowski?

i mean yeah its can of a reach but from toronto pov i feel like they need to get more physical and letang can fill a need in RHD that they need and be a physical player with major playoffs experience. They also save 3M$ with the retained salary so they can get some depth with that money. I really think the leafs need to trade nylander for some physicality, maybe not to pittsburgh for letang, but for a top 6 forward who is good defensivsly and can be physical for the playoffs.

Trading a 30 goal scorer for physicality is a good way to lose your job. Teach your guys to throw the body around, bench them if you need to send a message. But trading them because you don't like how often they hit is terrible asset management.

Though at times, Nylander's "style" is frustrating, I think fans often mistake physicality with effectiveness. So a less talented player than Nylander who can't stickhandle effectively, will throw the puck into the corner and then try to retrieve it with physicality. Nylander tries to maintain control of the puck by stick handling, skating and passing. So what is the better play?

It can be frustrating, but the better play is to have a guy who can hang on to the puck. Nylander is perfectly capable of handling the puck along the boards and making a smart pass to an open player. Can also carry it into the o-zone himself. Where as a guy who can't handle the puck well and needs to dump it in can't guarantee that he will get the puck back. Who cares if he hit the guy, the puck is gone and may be half way up the other end of the ice by the time he's in any sort of defensive position.

The leafs already got 2 top goalscorers in the league in matthews and tavares plus they also have marner i don't think they need nylander anymore and they can try to fill others holes in the team like their RHD and their depth. Also, imo the main piece in the trade is the salary cap. The leafs save about 3M$ this year and next year also which is huge for them

It's similar to some misleading stats. "Giveaways". Who is the better player, the player who makes the most giveaways or the players with the least? Traditionally the players with the most giveaways are the teams best players because they are given the responsibility of handling the puck.. "Shot blocks". Is it better to block shots or to stick check and retrieve the puck, or not have to block shots because you have possession of the puck.

In my humble opinion, puck possession > everything. If you have to block shots, hit people, stick check, whatever, it means you don't have puck. I can live with guys giving it away here and there, it's when they do it constantly that it becomes a problem. Willy knows how to handle the puck, really don't care if he hits people or not. Not sure why this has become such an obsession with the Leafs over the last couple years.

The leafs don't do this and the penguins don't either. Their RD would be so thin if they did.
