That's an awesome trade for SJ. Avs would never do that but it's gonna be an absolute yes from the Sharks.

A team with Jost and Bellemare on the 3rd line isn't winning a cup.

They absolutely shouldn't trade Gibson, that's for sure. Excellent goalie on an amazingly cheap contract in his prime? You can rebuild the team outward from a G like that. If I were the owner and my GM traded him, he'd be fired on the spot. In fact, I'd be surprised if Murray hasn't been outright told he cannot trade Gibson, period.

Pass up on a potential franchise Dman, at worst a top 2 Dman when by the time the team becomes relevant Gibson will have 2 or 3 years left on his deal in his 30s? By that time Dostal, Eriksson Ek, will be knocking on the door. Not to mention another 1st. Hell, use their own pick on Wallstedt if they aren't in the top 3.

These trades don't really make sense. Gru is no Gibson but he's played at a Vezina-worthy level so far this season. That Sharks trade is godawful no matter how you look at it - Nieto and Dubnyk are spare parts on any team and Meier is not anywhere close to worth what amounts to three 1st round picks plus other NHL-level players.

Couldn't disagree more. They're a bottom 3rd team and that won't be changing anytime soon. Won't matter if he wants out though

That's fine, we can disagree but I'll lay out the case for keeping him:

He could ask out but I wouldn't just trade him. Goalies are notoriously difficult to predict in their development so I wouldn't count on the younger guys being able to just step in when I've already got a true #1. Sure, Dostal could end up being a #1 but it could be a while before that happens or it could never happen. The biggest thing is Gibby's contract is very affordable so it won't be like Price's deal acting as an albatross. They actually have a pretty highly rated prospect pool (#7 according to Scott Wheeler at The Athletic for whatever that's worth) headlined by Zegras and Drysdale. Plus, their cap situation improves pretty dramatically over the next few years.

If I'm Murray, I stick with my best player (assuming he wants to stay), get my young guys in soon and find a way to be competitive in the next year or two then really push to contender status within 3-5 years. It can be done and I'd want to be sure I had a really good goalie to help make that happen.

Grubaeur has played well for 11 games...he has a history of not being that great in the playoffs. Meier is a first-liner signed long-term; the Sharks are taking on deadweight with Donskoi and Compher as well.

Good lord, this narrative again? He played really well the season before last in the playoffs. That series in Washington was 3 years ago and last year he was injured after winning the opening series. Other than that, he doesn't really have much of a playoff history so saying he has a history of being "not that great" is thin, at best. And still, no, Meier is not worth three 1st's even with taking on "dead weight."
