Sandin is better, and makes more sense to me for LA's long-term needs.

Didn't you just post in another thread how he's maybe a third pairing Dman?

Sandin is too much to give up for this upgrade

It saddens me to see Liljegren's value dropping like this, as I was so high on him when drafted, but there is no arguing he has thus far failed to make an NHL impact. That is on him.

I don't think the value is ridiculous with the retention, but I suspect by that time of year we won't need the retention. I don't think Iafallo is THAT much of an upgrade on what we have, and I'm leery to spend too much on him.

For Iafallo to have this much value I think it really depends on how many sellers there are. He's a good but not special piece. If there are a lot of wingers available, he doesn't get this much, maybe a 2nd and a more depth prospect. If the market is thin, he could get this or even a bit more.

I don't really want to be the one spending it...

After the Leafs' have finished destroying his development, yes he maybe ends up a third pairing D. On almost any other team (if they can get him before the Leafs' have ruined him) he will become a very good D.

Yes. Any trade with Sandin would be different that one with Liljegren, but Sandin - at this point - is worth the difference. While I never thought that Dubas would ever trade Sandin, the Leafs' have been doing a good job of destroying the relationship between him and management/coaching, it is easy to see in interviews, and I am sure other organizations have sensed that.

Yes. Might have to drop the pick to a 3rd. While I never thought that Dubas would ever trade Sandin, the Leafs' have been doing a good job of destroying the relationship between him and management/coaching.

I can't see that happening, but if it does he'll be better used in a trade for a RD. The Kings LD is just about solidified for the future with Anderson, Clague, and Bjornfot. All we need on the backend is a #2 RD behind Doughty which would make Lilly a good target. Is Lilly exempt to the expansion draft or does he have to be protected?

As long as he gets away from Toronto, Sandin will be better than Bjornfot, Anderson and Clague. It is unlikely that Lilly becomes a #2 RD and LA wasn't interested in him 2 years ago (whereas they wanted Sandin). Both are exempt from the expansion draft.

I highly doubt Toronto would trade Sandin for Iafallo or any other rental.

I would highly recommend that they don't, but the team is convinced (I'm not) that they are a strong contender and in win now mode. They will likely be overpaying for someone. They gave up a first and two 2nd round prospects for a year and a half of Muzzin - before they were in win now mode and with no retention. I think that being a rental bothers the Leafs less this year because they would have difficulty protecting any non-rental in the expansion draft anyway (as I assume they protect 4D along with Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander).

So the Leafs' want to bring in a guy who can play in the top-6 who they think will put them over the top. Rumour is that Granlund is a player they have been after. Iafallo has come up as well. In both cases they will want retention. What does Toronto have as a trade chip? Not much. They will not want to subtract from their current roster (other than someone like Engvall who they will likely lose on waivers anyway). A late first round pick for a draft where teams can't really scout players is not going to be worth close to as much as it normally would be. To me that leaves Sandin, Robertson and Liljegren, and I think that the first two are the much better choices for LA. If it was Iafallo (retained) and returning Toronto's 3rd (from the Campbell trade) for either Robertson or Sandin (probably with Engvall thrown in) I would do it if I was LA. If Toronto won't agree to that then I think it is best to keep Iafallo.

Given that Tofolli went to Vancouver for what is officially a 2nd (the conditional pick never transferred as he signed in Montreal), Iafallo's tag will be the same.

No need for Liligren at all. Or Sandin lol.

Toffoli had a cap hit of 4.6M which severely reduced the possibilities of any contending teams being able to be in on him. You would have to be a fool to compare the two. Coleman cost 2 firsts (2020 and Foote). Now Coleman had another year left on his contract, but due to the expansion draft an extra year is not of much appeal, and draft picks this coming year will have reduced value because the lack of playing opportunities and the lack of ability to scout will leave them a complete crap shoot.

I am.

Not sure what a comparable would look like. Projecting to be a 3rd line guy. Don't think that's Liligren. Defintely not Sandin.

More teams could have been in on Tofolli than you think. LA could have retained. Didn't but could have. Instead the Kings took Schaller to offset the cap hit. I believe Blake got a max return in Tofolli based in the market.

Even attempting to compare Iafallo to the Coleman deal is wrought with issues. For starters, most would say it was a massive overpay. You already brought up the extra year on the contract. Those two factors make it a bad comparable.

Can't buy the lack of trade market argument either. We have seen more early season deals than anyone could have predicted. Having said that, the deeper we get into the season, it does limit opportunities - 6 of them. Point here is if the Jets could wait two weeks for a Dubois, the Leafs can likely wait 2 weeks for an Iafallo.

Just see him as a 2nd rounder with window dressing return. Anymore than that for a rental is an overpay - by any team.
