Description
2017 - Leafs trade JVR to the Islanders to give them a 60 point 30 goal scorer on a great contract to play with Tavares. The cost is a first round pick and kulimen as a cap dump. The Leafs include a 4th round pick conditional on if the Islanders make the playoffs or not. They don't, finishing in the bottom 10.
Leafs continue to develop this young team and finish in the bottom 5 in 2017. They don't win the lottery but are happy to select Hischier, the dynamic Swiss born star at 4.
Bozak is takin in the expansion draft.
Komorov plays out his contract and walks as a UFA in 2018.

2018 - Leafs finish in the bottom 5 in the league again for the last time. They win the lottery and draft young star Rasmus Dahlen
2019 - Leafs sign Tavares to a 3 year 15 mill AVV. He takes the 3 years knowing he will still get big money at 30 and can then sign until he's 37/38 on his next deal vs sign at 27 for 7 years to 34. His next deal would be in the 8 mill range or more. He can also choose to jump ship and sign somewhere to win a cup at 30 if he chooses.
This helps the leafs as once the Marner (8yrs x 6mm) and Matthews (8yrs x 7.5mm) contracts are compete, there would only be one player needing a big pay increase with his deal expiring during the 3 years, Gardiner. Kapanen/Dermott/Nielsen also need new deals and slight raises would be appropriate.
With the addition of Dahlen and younger emerging players Nielsen/Dermott ready to play Gardiner gets moved before his contract expires for a first round pick in 2019.

Quite an assumption that the Isles (although It's Garth) will give up a top pick for a year of JVR. Despite paying JT all that money, that'sa pretty inexpensive and maybe not Cup contender good enough. Why not keep Gardiner?
Paying someone 15m isn't the way to build a "team". Might be more of a determent in hopefully long term signings of other stars.

          Assuming this isn't totally serious?

Doubt NYI trade a top 10 for JVR. He is not worth it and it will only be for 1 year of him...Kulemin is far from a cap dump and they have lots of space.

I don't know if DAL pays the price for Jake but I think the leafs should keep him in this scenario.

          Don't expose Bozak....

Honestly, I think Gardiner is worth way more to us then a middling first round pick. His defensive game is so underhyped. Watching him, he uses his speed and smarts to skate the puckout time and time again, I think he's becoming a truly capable defenseman (perhaps a really good no. 3 defenseman)

Also if the Leafs finish near the bottom I would like to see them find a way to pick Timothy Liljegren, he's a Doughty comparison and we could really use that Bonafide stud defenseman

If Tavares becomes a free agent and wants to come home he will need to sign for Stamkos type money so around 8.5 million.

the assumption to trade JVR for a first is based on the fact that the islanders don't know they have a top ten pick. They take the gamble to bring in a cheap proven scorer like JVR. I make the prediction that they don't make the playoffs and finish with the 10th overall pick. Paying JT the 15 mill is because the leafs can afford to for those years. Then he signs somewhere else at 30 or with the leafs for less then the avv he would have received at 27. This team would be young for sure but some of this young core would have enough experience to compete in the playoffs. Gardiner is traded because he is replaced by Dahlen and would command a big raise which would be hard to pay with the new young kids coming ecls in 2021/2022.

Islanders don't know they are picking 10th. Jvr could resign (they have lots of space). Kulimen is making 4+ for 2 years and will play 4th line checking role and put up 20-25 points. He's a dump. But take the injured Grabo if you would prefer. Gardiner is moved for the same reason a JVR is 2 yrs earlier, for salary purposes. I think he is a great D man. This trade is really not the focal point of this post. side note. many other things have taken place before this.
