Danault Rental Maybe Extension

Team: 2020-21 Florida Panthers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2021
Published: Feb. 18, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm not a Panthers fan but I'm seeing that production comes pretty equally across all four lines (or at least thus far). I think Danault might be a helpful rental who might stick around and re-sign.

I just assumed with the lines, Hornqvist and Huberdeau have been playing great so maybe Danault slides in there for defensive help on that line.

Habs are gearing up for the playoffs-As much as *some* Habs fans would love it (No idea why), there's no way they move him unless it's to upgrade. He's essentially a free rental for them.

Don't see any reason for MTL to move Danault though. Habs are a playoff team as well and he's their own rental in a sense.

I dont think MB would trade him as a rental... He might push for an extension followed by a trade in order to get full value. Rather keep him instead of adding a late first tho. I think the best fit would be MIN... They litteraly have 0 top 6 C and Danault would thrive in that role. He could also teach younger Cs like Rossi and JEE. I would target PIT first since it might become a top 10 pick. Add in Bonino and you still have a great team come playoff time.

Bonino, PIT first and a second for Danault extended and a 4th

I don't understand the ideology behind trading Danault in a slump I was just trying to make a trade with a team that might accept.

Yeah, I understand that...and the Panthers would be a decent landing spot for Danault, IMO.

I also don't think the Panthers should be moving 1st round picks at this point anyway.

Minnesota and Pittsburgh would be very nice options, JEE is playing well on Minnesota but they could definitely use him. I really think Pittsburgh would be another very good option, especially with how Malkin's playing.

But how would Danault feel playing 3rd C again? I think NYR could also be a nice fit depending on the assets they might offer

I think Minnesota would play him first line. Pittsburgh would probably play him 3rd or move Malkin to wing (unlikely). New York would work because he might be able to outplay Zibanejad for a 1st line spot.

Although I think Danault would fit in perfectly with the Panthers...I just can't see it happening with the way MTL is playing. They would probably like to keep him for the playoff push. Not a bad idea though and certainly should be a target for FLA in the off season if MTL doesn't resign him.

I agree with this in that if the Canadiens are a playoff team this trade makes little sense, but not all situations are that simple. For example, if Danault rejected an offer from the Canadiens at 6.5M x 6yrs he would become a valuable trading piece. Even though Montreal would be a playoff team, Montreal selling him would make sense rather than losing him to free agency for nothing.

1.Habs officially missed the playoffs 4 times out of the last 5 years.
2. They won 1 round total during that time.
3.Bergevin's contract ends at the end of the present season.
4.He just spent 141.5M in contract during the of season to pack the team.
5.If Habs dont go for a long playoff run, he looses his job.

The Canadiens roster is built around a window set a couple years from now, I understand and agree trading Danault would be foolish given their current situation. But if the Canadiens were to be in a spot where they are set to not make the playoffs by the trade deadline, this might make sense. A 2021 1st would result in a player fitting into this window nicely.

I agree on beeing sellers if off a playoff spot, as stated up here. (even if highly unlikely)

I disagree on the window time frame. The next 3 playoffs are the window, after that Price, Weber, Petry (even) Gally will be too old and Suzuki/kk/Romy will get raises plugging the capspace.
