How is Matthews not an A+? These all are weird. I also think ratings like this are sort of silly. Just point to Engvall as an example, the guy isn't a star and never will be, he won't score a lot but he is excellent defensively and gets really good possession numbers. That is what he is, so if he excells in the role he is given, isn't that deserving of a high grade?

It's all arbitrary, 4th liners get D's because they are not 1st liners. I think it would be more reasonable to give them grades based on how they succeed in the role they have.

What I mean is take any player and first examine the role they are supposed to play. For Matthews he needs to fill the net, which he is better than anyone else in the game. He needs to dominate at 5v5, yup! He also needs to be better in a two way sense and he absolutely is! He's been the Leafs best player and currently its hard to argue he isn't right there with MacKinnon fighting for 2nd best player in hockey. He gets and A+ without a doubt.

Now let's take Engvall for example, he won't ever fill the net, that isn't his skill set. His role is a bottom 6 defensive guy who on occasion can pitch in offensively but for the most part should be getting the puck out of his zone and into the offensive zone. He's been really good at that. He needs to be good on the PK, again he's done that. So why does he get a C? He's succeeding well at the role he's been handed.

Vesey is a guy who I think deserves a C, why? Because he isn't as good offensively as we had hoped which is disappointing but he's also been way better defensively than I expected.

Dermott at C and Lehtonen at B- doesn't make any sense. Dermott has been good. I think expecting him to get points is why some rate him poorly, but he is excellent defensively and does add some sand paper. He moves the puck well and is not far behind Rielly in skating ability. I'd give him a B and Lehtonen a C-. Lehtonen is really not good in his own end.

Boyd doesn't deserve an A, give him a B sure but an A is ridiculous. Barbarov should have the lowest rating on the team, Thornton not getting an A is insulting especially when you give Simmonds an A-. Simmonds I'd give a B to, he's been better than expected but far from a game breaker, just does is job well. Hyman has been exactly what everyone expects so a A-/B+ is fair for him. Hutchinson should have won 7-1 last night so giving him a B- is weird.
