I don't understand the Leafs fans hype around asking for Staal. He's not what they need. They need a defensive 3rd line centre, not an offensive one. The team has enough guys to score, and its obvious Kerfoot needs to play the wing. Keefe wants the third line to be a shutdown line and Staal isn't gonna be in the Selke conversation anytime soon.

Low key guys to target:
1. Nick Bonino
2. Travis Zajac
3. Riley Nash

all fit the role better and can kill penalties while winning faceoffs (Nash is a bit weaker at faceoffs but he's still a career 48% on draws) & I think trying to acquire any of those guys would likely only cost a pick, not any roster players or decent prospects. I'd be cautious to remove anyone from the roster, even keep Engvall.

Id rather have a better prospect than a nothing prospect and a 2nd

Though I wouldn't mind having Staal, I don't understand the need to move Kerfoot to the wing. Kerfoot is finding his way quite nicely at centre. I wouldn't move Kerfoot up to line playing with Tavares and Nylander. Think a forechecking heavy player like Mikheyev or Hyman is needed there

Kerfoot is very much a good hard fast forechecker. Hyman has just not helped to get things going on tat line. Need that 1-2 punch back.

Gotta fit it under the cap too. All good points here. I don’t think staal is awful defensively. With Hyman and Mikheyev that one would still be solid and produce offensively as well.

Keep in mind deadline adds are prorated. Bonino is only a $477,155 cap hit. They should be able to add him plus a bit more. Staal would be less than that, I just don't see his play fitting in unless he's in the top 6 which I don't think he makes
