I’m not too sure on the value of either player in that Edmonton trade but it seems reasonable at a glance. Edmonton does have too many young D.

Jost would definitely serve the bottom 6 better than Turris. And yeah, at some point have to use a LD prospect to address other issues on the roster.

I think I'd go for it.

That was my thinking.

At LHD Edmonton have: Nurse, Klefbom, Russell, Jones, Koekkoek, Lagesson, Broberg, and Samorukov.

And at RHD: Larsson, Barrie, Bouchard, Bear.

Even factoring in Larsson, Barrie, and Koekkoek being UFA's that still leaves:

Nurse ----- Bear
Klefbom -- Bouchard
Broberg
Russell
Jones
Lagesson
Sakorukov

That's quite a deep LHD side to break into for Samorukov. And considering that he hasn't played in the NHL yet he's still a bit of an unknown.

At the same time, they have a pretty bad bottom 6 and the 23rd ranked PK unit, both of which Jost would help in, while only costing league minimum this season. Considering that Jost is also from the Edmonton area he'd likely be reasonably cheap to resign this offseason too.

It's a bit of a short-term loss for Colorado as they lose a useful depth piece for the playoffs, but they would likely be able to overcome that with their good forward depth (O'Connor, Sherwood, Bowers, Kaut, etc). It would pay dividends next season though as the Avs are likely to have a hole at 3LHD when Graves gets taken by Seattle, making Samorukov a cheap solution in that role.

It would kind of suck to lose Jost for a rental but it could be worth it.

Samo is a prospect on an ELC. So no renting for ya there, if that's what you're saying.

Edit: you mean Staal as a rental? I bet if Staal had a good run he'd resign cheap for another go with the Avs.

Samorukov isn't a rental. He's a 21 year old LHD on the 2nd year of his ELC. Probably tops out as a solid 3rd pairing guy, but on an ELC that would be valuable to the Avs next year and Edmonton likely wouldn't use it given that he's behind so many other LHD's in their system.

From Edmonton's perspective they get a long-term solution as well, so it would work for them too.

Staal would be the only pure rental here, and that's absolutely fine for a 3rd round pick to fix the 3C hole.

Staal was shocked to get traded from Minnesota as he signed a cheap deal to stay there because he settled with his family there. I think he'd be much more likely to want to return closer to that area where his family is, rather than staying in Colorado. He already has his cup too so there's no motivation there.

Btw, this trade would also be beneficial for Colorado for the expansion draft as well, seeing as Samorukov is expansion exempt and Jost isn't. Edmonton would certainly protect Jost as he's younger and more valuable than a few other contracts they have at forward, so it wouldn't be a negative for them.

Mackinnon, Rantanen, Kadri, Burakovsky, Landeskog, Nichuskin, O'Connor
Makar, Girard, Toews
Grubauer

Exposed: Compher, Donskoi, Graves, Johnson (waives NMC), Francouz

That basically guarantees that Seattle would take a $3m+ contract from the Avs. Or alternatively Avs could protect Donskoi to try to funnel Seattle more towards Compher.

Yeah, that was what I was getting at - that Staal would be a rental. Still, having a better 3C and getting a solid young, cheap 3rd pair D to prepare for Graves' departure (one way or another, he's gone after this season, IMO) is not a bad return.

Avs are going to need to add a 3C one way or another at the deadline, and that's going to create a log-jam on the 4th line unless someone is moved out, as only 3 of Calvert/Bellemare/Compher/Jost/O'Connor can play.

Compher would obviously be the ideal one to move, but I think it will be difficult to do that until the offseason. Don't want to move Nichuskin or Calvert either, and Donskoi is needed as someone who can jump into the top 6 if needed. Bellemare is important because he's winning 68% of his faceoffs on the PK. Jost is a bit of the odd man out in that situation, and moving him for a useful young LHD who can step into the 3rd pairing LHD next season would be smart roster management.

All things considered, these are not bad moves. Staal could really help solidify the bottom 6 and having a cheap young D that can play right away is good. Avs will need space in the offseason and if Newhook can come in next season and play 3C, it won't hurt to have Staal be only a rental. Plenty of guys within the organization and in FA the Avs can fill in that bottom 6 with next season.

Yeah rn if Edmonton protects 7 forwards, the 7th fwd is probably Archibald/Benson. Love Archie and Benson still has some promise, but Jost has more value for sure. And if Seattle takes Archie or any other exposed forward rather than Lagesson or Jones it'd be a win for the Oil anyway in my eyes.

If the Oil are likely going to got he 7-3-1 route, may as well make sure the 7 forwards are in the best shape possible (McD, Drai, RNH (should be locked down as early as possible, I doubt a handshake deal is really in RNH's bargaining interest and he holds a lot of cards), Yammo, Pulju, Kahun, Jost)
