I’m not too sure on the value of either player in that Edmonton trade but it seems reasonable at a glance. Edmonton does have too many young D.
That was my thinking.
At LHD Edmonton have: Nurse, Klefbom, Russell, Jones, Koekkoek, Lagesson, Broberg, and Samorukov.
And at RHD: Larsson, Barrie, Bouchard, Bear.
Even factoring in Larsson, Barrie, and Koekkoek being UFA's that still leaves:
Nurse ----- Bear
Klefbom -- Bouchard
Broberg
Russell
Jones
Lagesson
Sakorukov
That's quite a deep LHD side to break into for Samorukov. And considering that he hasn't played in the NHL yet he's still a bit of an unknown.
At the same time, they have a pretty bad bottom 6 and the 23rd ranked PK unit, both of which Jost would help in, while only costing league minimum this season. Considering that Jost is also from the Edmonton area he'd likely be reasonably cheap to resign this offseason too.
It's a bit of a short-term loss for Colorado as they lose a useful depth piece for the playoffs, but they would likely be able to overcome that with their good forward depth (O'Connor, Sherwood, Bowers, Kaut, etc). It would pay dividends next season though as the Avs are likely to have a hole at 3LHD when Graves gets taken by Seattle, making Samorukov a cheap solution in that role.
